I know I’m not the only one who agrees with me when I say that Halo 4 has too much armor. There are so many different types of armor, that it’s basically pointless. I think that the armor in Halo 3 was the best. Not necessarily because it was the coolest(which it actually was) but because it was diverse. In Halo 3, I could look at a guy and say, “Oh, he has that armor.” Where as in Halo 4, I look for the coolest armor for my guy and never consider armor again, it’s just too much for me. It’s pointless.
The reason why Halo 3 armor was so cool was for two reasons. Number 1, it was limited and simple and really awsome. It had enough choices to satisfy all players without having to search through a list of 100 different pieces that are hardly different. Number 2, you actually had to earn the armor. In Halo Reach and Halo 4, all you have to do is play the game a lot and get it. But in Halo 3, you had to get achievements. Wearing the armor was showing the world what you have accomplished. It actually meant something. Some of the achivements were hard to get( especially the vidmasters). The armor was a person’s way of saying," Yeah, I got that achievement. I’m that good." Where as now its like," Yeah, I played 47 hours of Halo. I’m that good."
In Halo 5 I hope that the armor will be few, and hard to get. That way I can wear armor and know I did something awesome.
I liked Halo 3s armor selection too but myself i felt Halo: Reach had the best armor. I liked the more Military look and there was no wierd looking ones. There was a good amount there.
As with the earning you armor, yeah on Halo 3 i felt like i earned my Security and Katana. That said on Halo 4 i feel i earned my GUNGNIR armor. I had to win 535 Slayer games!! With randoms and mainly alone it was not the easiest thing i’ve done.
h4’s armor isn’t really bad, but I don’t know how we went from the halo reach styled stuff to the halo 4 almost alien inspired helmets.I know this is gen2 stuff so it’s obviously progressed. But it just looks … so different.
Halo 4 armor would be hands down the best if the under suit was fully black. Its almost a little frusturating that they made it have primary color on the top.
I agree, its not that I dislike the armour but I do think that there should be less.
Like with the stances, atm if you see someone with breach, standoff or believe (think thats their names) you know immediately they’ve mastered one of the weapon (or just ordnance?) sets.
Great thing about Halo is being able to customize your own Spartans so having a lot more items to choose from is a lot better.
I actually prefer 4 as it has a ton of different armour combos that I can mix and match with while Halo reach had a lot as well but I love the designs on the armour overall as the linings match up so well and a couple of different pieces share the same pattern meaning you can mix them.
Also I beg to differ with the achievement side as most of the achievements you could get armour from was easy. Plus 4 isn’t all about game time when it comes to most of the armours it’s mostly the vanilla armour sets that are pure game time.
Trying to rack up over 5000 kills in a specific race of weapons isn’t as easy as you think as you still need to be good with the weapon to be able to get them up.
If you’re bad with a certain weapon it’s going to take time to max it. Same way it would take time to get an achievement if you was bad at it.
Yea, Reach armor was definitely the best looking. Halo 4’s armor design is just… weird. I’m really not a fan of ANYTHING in Halo 4’s design department, honestly.
Also, I don’t know if anyone feels the same way, but armor permutations are kind of pointless in Halo anyways. Even if Halo 4’s armor looked GOOD, who’s going to notice? This is a medium-paced first person shooter, where everyone is wearing slight variations of the same armor. After I die, I might be able to recognize an enemy’s helmet, but I’m sure as hell not going to see what kind of chest armor he’s wearing, or gauntlets. And as for my own armor? I’m never going to see it, especially not in team games. Armor customization didn’t really become a thing until Halo 3, and honestly the previous Halos weren’t really missing much.
I think it would be great if Halo abandoned most of the armor permutations (most, not all) for a few distinct armor kinds, and then took that level of customization to weapon skins. That would make more sense to me, since the only thing you’re going to be staring at all match is going to be your gun.
I feel like Halo 4 armour should have options on how you wanna look ( ie: Choose between a reach look or a H3 look or a H4 look)
I don’t like the achievement armour unlock system because like someone said above me, the armour was too easy to get. If I remember correctly, you got armour for beating the game on normal.
I was never a fan of Reach’s armor. It reminded me of people that skip leg day at the gym. It was proportionately hilarious. My friends and I always laughed when people came in with 2 knives on each shoulder and their chest. We were waiting for the day they would just finally make tank treads available as legs.
Halo 3’s was the best to me but I like 4’s a lot too.
I agree with OP and with the fact that Reach has the best design so far. H4 armours don’t feel like Halo. As if the UNSC would make that many types of armour to equip their Spartans…
Well i do like they have such a wide selection of armors! But 70% of it… Looks ugly as hell. I would prefer they took some inspiration from Halo3/Reach regarding Armor design.
I liked the Reach armor best by far. It was gritty, dented, and worn. It looked useable and functional and gave the impression that the wearer had seen some action. Except for the helmets, most of 4’s armor looks the same. Where are the pouches and such? I need pockets for these extra bullets!
As for the helmets, most are too angular and narrow and make you look like a grasshopper (rouge) or have pointless crap on them that makes you look like a unicorn (really? Fotus?)

I miss the pockets, miss them being visible on the spartan and that’s why I loved Reach spartan armor. Where do you think these Spartans keep their ammo…?
I think Reach had the best armor, but I still like Halo 4’s. Halo 3’s wasn’t very interesting to me because there wasn’t very much of it. Halo 4 has a lot of different options, and there are some really good looking sets. (Although some of them don’t make any sense. Mostly ones without visors.)
I wish there was a “partially” option. I’ve found I don’t like about half of the helmets.
Of the ones I don’t like, it’s mostly because they look way to foreign to what I’ve come to know as Halo Spartan Armor.
Too Transformers-like, or too Power Ranger-like. One of the biggest issues I have is the visors. How is a spartan to see out of a slit, as in the Wetwork helmet, for example?
Notice how all of Fireteam Majestic from Spartan Ops have believable helmets and visors?
The chest, shoulder, arms and legs armor really isn’t as important to me. THere is enough variety there that anyone should be able to find something they like. However, lack of classic Halo armor IS an issue. CQB anyone?
Another issue I have is the secondary color patterns. A good many of them just have no rhyme or reason to them. They do not make sense and look haphazard.
It is my hope for the next Halo game that we get believable helmets, classic armors back, and secondary patterns that have a reason for looking the way they do.
