Halo 4 and strong language.

Strong language (if done right) can really adds a verbal emphasis and stronger emotional feel to a scene.

By no means should halo 4 have unnecessary swearing on the same level as games like Gears of War, but it would feel more realistic to hear actual cursing beyond a “damn”… Just something I know most of the community would probably like to see.

I suppose Bungie was trying to be a class act by not using strong language. Hopefully 343 changes this.

SON OF A GUN

I agree

As much as I respect Bungie for trying to keep Halo on the classy side, unlike most games…I do have to admit when I played ODST for the first time and heard the ‘son of a gun’ line I just about died xD It was just so…out of place. So yes some more mature language in intense scenes would be welcome on my part.

I am so sick of people talking about the “son of a gun” line. That’s just Alan Tudyk. Look at his work, that’s just part of the characters he plays, most notably Wash from Firefly/Serenity.

Honestly, I get what you’re saying, but I don’t see the need to increase the swearing at all. Go play some of the games again, the characters do swear. Unlike other games, this isn’t emphasized, and is often missed because the main characters don’t speak much if at all.

You should have used Bulletstorm as an example OP.

IMO Gears of War 3 wasn’t that bad on the swearing, almost perfect.

I use gears as an example cause the swearing is over-the-top. The constant use of the word S*** is absurd.

Gears of War is over the top? Then you never played Bulletstorm.

Some of the lines in bulletstorm were absolutely hilarious. Really makes me sad they aren’t making a sequel :frowning:

But yeah, I agree with this. Nothing over the top like gow or even bf3 for that matter, but some stronger language would add more gravitas to the story and nerf some of the cheesiness that appears from time to time in cutscences. The game is rated M afterall. It’s not like it would result in mass corruption of our youth or anything

Instead of cursing, why not build up the gravitas of the game though the story and it’s events.

Thank you. Someone else besides me that doesn’t want Halo to have strong language. I never cuss, and the one thing I like about Halo is that it doesn’t have as much of it. Bulletstorm was funny, but it wasn’t Halo. Halo is Halo.

Agreed. The UNSC is the military, people swear a lot in the military. I don’t necessarily want to hear them cussing up a storm about everyday little things, but in moments of panic or frustration/rage there should be some cussing. I just don’t want it to sound like something a little kid would say while cursing about something.

I agree that it’s nice to have a game that doesn’t cuss all the time, I also never cuss. But I do want a realistic/believable reaction from the characters when something happens.

Again, you need to go back and replay the games. The characters do swear when it’s appropriate. The difference with Halo is that it’s not emphasized, and often missed since the playable characters don’t swear.

Fair enough. I want the story to be great first and foremost. But I find that it’s easier to suspend my disbelief and lends credibility to the characters when they aren’t all portrayed as moral puritans who always watch their mouth even though they’re in the middle of a desperate war for the survival of the human race.

I don’t want swearing just for shock value. But showing that some characters are a little more crude or a little less moral can add depth to a cast. I’ll cite the “I don’t give a damn” line at the end of the film Gone with the Wind. That film was from the 1930’s, an era where cursing was far more taboo than it is now, but that line is perhaps one of the most famous in all of cinema because of how it fit into the story. Which I think proves, at least conceptually, that language can help augment a good story if it is used right, as opposed to when it is just carelessly written into it.

Well don’t expect cursing from Spartans, it’s just not something they do. Marines can, as they already do, but Halo has an appropriate amount of cursing.

Marines only use actual swearwords if you’re using IWHBYD…

> Well don’t expect cursing from Spartans, it’s just not something they do. Marines can, as they already do, but Halo has an appropriate amount of cursing.

A big reason why I prefer Halo over many other shooters is because the cursing is kept to tasteful levels, as opposed to almost every sentence containing at least one or two.

I actually remember the Spartans in Noble team throwing “hell” and “damn” around at least a few times. And as far as MC is concerned, well, he just never really talks much anyways in the games. And I’d have to go back and re-read the novels again to see how much its done there (but I don’t really care that much). But all that is beside the point. I simply think that if swearing could strategically be used to enhance the story, i.e. to add value to it, that to go and later remove it from the dialogue simply because society says “oh no! bad word alert!” would be illogical. Of course, if done wrong, or carelessly, then yes, it doesn’t belong.

Then again, if its not in the story, I won’t lose any sleep. I’m just not against it.

I’m an adult and I swear, I have no issue with my games or characters swearing in situations where I would drop expletives myself.

Imagine crashing FUD on Requiem then standing up as the fighting clears to see the awe-inspiring vista…I’d drop a -BLAM!!- or a -BLAM!!- for sure.

If I threw an Elite down an elevator shaft I’d also most likely trash talk them as they fall too, those sorts of swearing moments would be welcomed by me.

I think it would be interesting to see a more mature Halo game, but some people would probably get upset, given the series standards. It would be a big gamble for 343i if they used more mature language.

I want good scenes, not cuss words.
