Halo 4 Additions: Good/Bad/Ugly

Let’s take some time to go over some of the additions that Halo 4 brought to the series. But before we do, keep it friendly. I’m Halo 3 fan and didn’t like the majority of the additions (POD, Classes, Sprint, Insta-Spawn etc.) but I wanted to know what you guys DID like and didn’t like. I’ll be honest and say that I liked the Binary Rifle and Incineration Cannon, the Rail Gun was a good addition, the Sticky Launcher was alright and they made an Assault Rifle that wasn’t useless. But, the weapons are getting TOO REDUNDANT! Why is it that the Magnum, Battle Rifle, DMR, Carbine, and Light Rifle all do basically the same thing but with slight differences? One UNSC precision marksman/ utility rifle is enough and the BR is much easier to balance. I would be alright with the Magnum but without dual wield it seems kind of pointless and functions similar to the Covenant Carbine (High ROF precision weapon). In my opinion the Carbine isn’t very interesting, Covenant weapons traditionally are more effective to shields than health and this could make an interesting mechanic for a precision weapon. Alternatively, the Needle Rifle seems alright as the super combine made it seem less of a clone. The Light Rifle is tough, I see where they were coming from with the dual fire modes but one is a BR clone and the other a DMR clone. Perhaps, the Light Rifle could have a short charge up and a slower projectile and a slower rate of fire and be a 2 or 3 hit kill. Or, just scrap the Light Rifle because so many precision weapons is already ridiculous. Another thing with Halo 4 is the Mantis, I didn’t mind it too much so I wouldn’t care if it stayed or went. The final point about Halo 4 I want to touch on is Spartan Ops, I liked Spartan Ops and had some fun with it but they should have had at least one Firefight styled level. They could have squeezed one in as the last mission like the final mission in Halo Reach. Other than that I can’t think of other additions from Halo 4 I’d like them to keep in Halo 5.

Ahh paragraphs!

My thoughts:

Good: Dominion, big armory

Bad: Sprint, perks, bullet hoses, 1sk boltshot, Ops, commendations

Ugly (i.e. things that I like in theory but need to be totally revised to work in Guardians): Loadouts, armor/weapon skins, JIP

Good:
Sound track

Thruster pack.

New enemies.

The helmet effect on MCs HUD where you can see the outline of the decal on his visor.

Magnets in forge.

Turkey bowl.

Bad:

UI

Armour

JIP

Instant respawn

Too many big maps at launch

Song that plays when you first put in the game.

Promethean knights being bullet sponges and difficult to tell the difference between them.

Lack of older characters in campaign

Ugly:

Lack of skill based ranking system.

Spartan ops missions being repetitive.

Sprint

Unbalanced loadout options

Grenade indicators / hitmarkers

Master chief having feelings (personal opinion)

Sarah Palmer

ordinance

Aiming too easy

Lack of classic oddball, ctf and no assault gametype

Perks

Armour abilities

I think that completes my list.

Good: - Thruster PAck

  • Railgun
  • Mantis
  • Speed and Damage Boost
  • Oddball toss ability
  • Extraction
  • Plethora of Visor Colors
  • Introduction of Stances
  • Snapshot
  • Best Carbine ever
  • Oohhh almsot forgot, Cortana’s dead

The Bad

The Ugly

I passionately agree with this. I found some of MCs lines cringeworthy! Mostly because Chief suddenly just changed personality completely(or got one, as the pro-feelings people would say), but partially because his voice doesn’t fit. The time he said “Cortanaaa!” As Cortana got pulled away or something was delivered horrifically, in my opinion.

We seem to be in the minority though, but this whole thing of taking Chief from an unflinching and focused super soldier, who took you on a wondrous space odyssey, to changing him into a broken, reckless and troubled emo-figure is just too much for me. Explore Chiefs character, sure, but I always thought part of his charm was that one could kind of “fill in the blanks” when he kept silent.

It is not the end of the world if I disagree a bit with how the H5G campaign should have been, but it’s not the end of the world if I get a PS4 either.

Dominion was a good fun game type but it always seemed laggy to me. The customization in the armory was alright, some things were kind of an eye sore but hey, people want an ‘ugly’ character that is their choice not mine. I’m a huge anti-sprint guy, enough said… By bullet hoses do you mean the SAW? I didn’t mind the SAW but remove the Suppressor and Storm Rifle they were useless. Boltshot = BAD! I agree. Spartan Ops is meh. I’d live with it but I prefer Firefight… Although, come to think of it a Beast mode like Gears of War 3 would be amazing. I don’t have a problem with commendations, they are just challenges that give people more incentives to play (if executed right). I’m glad equal starts replaced loadouts, but I think skins “could” work.

So for skins it would be in the Armory as: Default weapon skin. You then choose a skin and it applies to your weapon. This would make it so that BR/AR/DMR/SMG/ whatever starts you have the same skin.

personally, I think they had the right idea, but they just went way too far with it. I think it was good for him to have feelings because it develops his character even more. However, like Fairtube said, his lines were cringeworthy at times, and they could have been delivered much better.

They should have also made him more badass. At times, he kind of looked like the Didact’s -Yoink-. They should have more cutscenes where he’s just proving how truly badass he is. He really needs some awesome action scenes that show how amazing he is, like how the books show him as a covenant killing machine. Sorry for rambling :stuck_out_tongue:

whoops, meant to quote fairtube and OH DAT UP SMASH

Good-
-Post-launch support
-Graphics

Bad:
A large, large list. Here are a few:
-Armor Abilities
-Sprint
-Personal Loadouts
-Ordinance
-No Custom Search at launch
-Released Halo 4’s Beta in November 2012 and releasing the true, full product in November 2013 with the Game of the Year Edition

I really don’t know what 343 was thinking when making this game.
“My goodness, isn’t this going to be the best game ever?!”
“We are going to make Halo king again!!”
“We are so original and are going to be giving the fans the best product ever!”

Or a conversation at a meeting:
“Hey (insert desired employee’s name here), wouldn’t it be great if we drop random weapons around the map!”
“Yeah! How about bring in custom classes to add to all the random fun!”
“The more random the more ways we have for good ol’ fun!”

I got a little carried away there. But oh well. All they need to do to make a good game is not sell us a beta.

No problem! I guess I see your point. My main complaint was that giving Chief “feelings” results in him being weaker and more rash, when he was bred to be a super soldier from the age of six. His life has literally almost always been about completing his missions no matter what, I won’t buy it if he now breaks down like a pubescent teenager!

Not that he is that bad yet, though, and your suggestion to make him more “badass” can remedy a lot of that I think! He is not immortal, but he has spent a lifetime honing his skills, and his calculating and Herculean nature is what draws me into him. “I won’t”, two words that gave me goosebumps. He deserves more epic action scenes, definitely! Hopefully, both of us will be happy come H5G

Don’t you ever get tired of raging about Sprint?

> Don’t you ever get tired of raging about Sprint?

You say that as if I enjoy this.

I hate raging. I wish I could be happy with Halo again. That would be a dream.

But I’m not allowed to have that, because -Yoinking!- [REDACTED] is delusional and enjoys killing Xbox exclusives (he was also the man behind Gears Judgment multiplayer, btw. WHAT A FANTASTIC EXPERIENCE THAT WAS!).

Him and his illogical -Yoinking!- idea that Halo needs sprint just because other FPSs have it… it -Yoinking!- frustrates me to no end.

This awful, game ruining mechanic is here to stay for good, and 343 doesn’t give a single -Yoink- about the outcry it’s caused for the past four years.

It’s total -Yoinking!- horse -Yoink-!

•Good: Hitscan weapons, New renditions to classic gametypes, Prometheans, Storyline, Art Direction, Grenade Indicators, Jumping felt natural and smooth
•Bad: Flinch, Instant Respawn, Certain Unbalanced Weapons, Can’t turn off join-in-progress, Level design was too linear, Chief didn’t act like Chief, Elites and Grunts look stupid, Lack of rock-style music, Slower base movement speed, no falcons, inability to play with mouse/keyboard setup
•Ugly: Custom Classes, Sprint, Perks, Random Ordnance, Personal Ordnance, No forge world, less custom game options, kill times were too fast (post-TU), too much auto-aim

I find it odd that MC got more upset over the death of his holographic girlfriend than over the death of James, who literally got propelled into the blackness of space to drift off until he eventually suffocates, or when linda almost died or when he went back to reach in first strike to find out most of his fellow Spartans didn’t even make it to the base let alone survive long enough for him to rescue them. He never mentioned once in halo 4 how he misses the people he spent his entire life with. I mean he sure did pick an awkward time to develop a need for companionship.

Chief was always the well composed soldier who had a mission and didn’t let distractions get in the way. You’re description or chief is exactly how I saw him as well. I even saw someone post how they want chief to have a mental break down and start hearing cortana’s voice in his head.

Some say that cortana was “the straw that broke the camel’s back” but what made cortana so special? Chief witnessed 27 years of viscous war full of heroic sacrifices but he starts to lose it at the first thought that a computer program is nearing the end of its life cycle?

I think that 343 was trying to push some sort of love story between chief and cortana and personally I found it rather absurd. Granted we are in the minority and that’s ok. Not everybody sees things the same way but I definitely prefer bungie’s chief/cortana relationship to 343’s.

As if John wasn’t bonded to Cortana, like a close sibling, in the original trilogy?

What game was I playing all of these years?

“Why?”
Personal Ordnance
Customs
Medal Spam
Maps
Forerunner Weapons
Inexplicable time anomaly between community complaints and developer response.
Half-finished file share.
Half-finished game in general.

Strange
Prometheans

Intriguing
Loadouts
Weapon Waypoints

> kill times were too fast (post-TU),

No.

I played 200 games of vanilla H4.

Bad: Infinity, Personal Ordinance, Random Ordinance, No descope, flinch, fall damage/mechanics, sprint, strafing, Snipe sound/size on screen, DMR, loadouts with armour abilities, custom loadouts, armour abilities, weapon balance, maps, Auto flag, Ball throwing, Playlists, No in game Ranks, No Ranked/Social seperation, JiP, Boring EXP progression, no GC search preference (was this changed later?), Lobbys clunky/awkward looking

Ugly: Wasn’t a fan of the art or MM spartan models.

That’s exactly the problem, that for Chief to suddenly have emotional issues is such a break of character, and it breaks with his previous history. Glad to hear someone else voice this as well. I’ve always found the Chief/Cortana relationship to be special, but that’s because it’s a kind of partnership between an AI and a genetically enhanced super human. Where love fits in is beyond me. Chief is a loner and always will be. That his solitude and “stolen childhood” (with a little help from a woman in his ear) is the key ingredient to saving the galaxy is kind of beautiful to me.

Hopefully 343 won’t drag “this Chief” much further, but at least they seem to be making great strides in the right direction in other departments, so I have a good feeling that H5 will surpass H4 in quality, so there’s that. Always nice to hear someone who shares your opinion, though.

And I am FairTube, btw, but that account got suspended for unknown reason. This is the only place I have been posting, I think.

The armory was a good idea but poorly implemented in my humble opinion. The armor lacked distinction, and the skins became the defining marks. It just needs to go back to the drawing board, is all I’m saying. Skins that apply to all armors/guns is the way to go.

As for the bullet hoses, I was on about the AR/SR/Suppressor. I enjoyed the AR immensely, but the weapons didn’t have much distinction between them. The SAW was cool, i liked it, but aside from a slow reload time it really didn’t have any drawbacks, which I feel a power weapon should have at least one of. It was sadly just another overpowered power weapon in the H4 sandbox.
