NOTE: Apparently I miscommunicated something, since several people are bringing up 1-50. This thread has NOTHING to do with skill based ranks, I am refering to “EXP” in Halo 3. The military ranks. Please stop talking about 1-50. NOTE****
Halo 3, without a doubt, had the greatest progression system in any Halo game, and possibly in any LIVE game. It just makes sense. If you win or tie 1 game you get 1 experience, if you lose you get NOTHING, if you quit out you lose 1 experience. Then on top of that, they added a progression system per playlist, under the same rules.
This system encourages and rewards winning, and it was the longest lasting progression system of any game I have played. It took me 2+ YEARS to get to the max rank in Halo 3. Even after that, though, every game still feels like I am working towards something, whereas in H4 once you reach max rank, the progression system is literally pointless.
I do not understand why this system was completely removed in favor of a system that is OVERUSED, NOT UNIQUE, NOT REWARDING. Seriously. It is decisions like these that make me actually mad about what has been done to Halo. You take out what was unique about it and put in what EVERY ONE ELSE in the industry is doing.
Halo 4 has the quickest ranking system of any Halo and it is the least rewarding. Why did you completely LIE when you said winning will be important to ranking up or sometheing along those lines? Why could you not have put Halo 3’s progression system in Halo 4, at least in some form? This IS a sequel to HALO 3, why does everything about it scream Reach 2?
> Halo 4 grants you extra XP for winning, and keeps track of your games won.

It’s ok, you can stop the over dramatic exaggeration now, it’s gotten rather tedious.
> Halo 4 grants you extra XP for winning, and keeps track of your games won.

You get an insignificant amount of extra XP for winning. You could lose every single game in Halo 4 and progress to SR 130 in maybe 30% more time. In Halo 3 you would NOT progress. Period. That is how it should be.
And I am talking about the progression system not 1-50. Any progression system is abused, just look at the AFK boosting in Reach, and I gauruntee there is boosting in H4.

It’s not an exaggeration though.
The Ranking system was really abused.

And the ban hammer has swung swiftly onto many-a-cheater.
There’s boosting in every game, but Halo 3’s was abused a lot more than other games I’ve played.
Sure, the XP system made sense, but it was dated.

EVERY
SYSTEM
IN
EVERY
GAME
IS
ABUSED
Let me say that again. Every single leaderboard, progression system, skill based rankings, etc…gets abused, hacked, glitched, etc…
Guess we should just rid them of gaming completely.

No, No, it really was not, Before I joined these forums in 2011, I had never even heard about “boosters” in the game, why? Because I had never seen or heard my friends or randoms complaining about them, why? Because it was no where near as common as what people make it out to be. The majority of the people who bring up “boosters” are usually the people that were pretty poor at the game.
I’d also like to point out to you that no matter what system there is, people will abuse it.
I don’t understand what’s so appealing about an exp progression system. Ranks in progression mean completely nothing, because all you have to do to achieve a high rank with a progression system is no life the game, and you’ll obtain it regardless of your actual skill level. Inheritor in Halo Reach meant nothing because you could get there via AFKing… in FIREFIGHT.

How is it “dated.” WTF does that even mean? Dated? So getting 1 EXP per win made sense 5 years ago, but now it doesnt? Now you have to get some arbitrary number in the thousands that become useless once you reach max rank?

I dont either, but at least the progression system made sense in Halo 3, and you actually HAD to win in order to progress.
The only “flaw” that could be said of the system is that it was tied to your skill based rank, thus locking out many players from achieving the top rank, but that can be completely fixed. Its not like Halo 3’s progression system has to be tied to 1-50.

I’d also like to point out that I never said that.
Anyway, the Ranking System was heavily abused by people with separate accounts, tearing their way through lower ranks, and Halo 3 ranked you up a lot faster if you had less exp.
Before I used the forums (2009, I think), I saw loads of people with only 50 exp, but a level 50 Rank.
Poor at the the game or not, boosting was pretty apparent in Halo 3’s MM.
> How is it “dated.” WTF does that even mean? Dated? So getting 1 EXP per win made sense 5 years ago, but now it doesnt? Now you have to get some arbitrary number in the thousands that become useless once you reach max rank?

It’s dated because most games now use those “arbitrary number in the thousands that become useless once you reach max rank”.
If you’ve reached max rank, just because you can’t see how much exp has, doesn’t mean that you can’t see how many games you’ve won.
Ever check a Halo 4 service record? “Games Won”.

WTF are you talking about? I am not referencing 1-50 at all. That is not the progression system in Halo 3.
I am talking about the EXP system. Why are you even bringing up the abuse to 1-50?

Yeah I agree with that. I was talking about those stupid progression systems that let you rank up regardless of actual gameplay performance. Case in point, Halo Reach, and apparently Halo 4 as well. Heck, H4 even has double exp codes.
> WTF are you talking about? I am not referencing 1-50 at all. That is not the progression system in Halo 3.

sigh
Your argument is that you can’t see your EXP anymore, correct?
EXP was how many games you’ve won, subtracted by how many you’ve left/was kicked out of.
Halo 4’s service record tells how how many games you’ve won, and doesn’t subtract any penalty you have had.

So lets just conform to what everyone else does? Who wants that? That is what is WRONG with the developement practices of 343.
And you have to dig more for “games won” whereas EXP was front and center.

You dont understand my point of view at all. Did you even read the OP?
My point, is that Halo 3 had a simple, intuitive, rewarding progression system that promoted winning.
Completely agree, I really miss the EXP playlist ranks, what’s the point in taken them out? I loved them. And btw, you get EXP in Halo 3 if you tie, just thought I’d say.
I agree that is my least favorite part of cod is that there is no rank a duck playing the game would eventually become a master prestige. In h3 i had to work for my 50 and once i got it i could eventually hit 5 star general. But yes i hate these ranking systems there so dumb and they are bassically playing nothing. the only thing they say is how much a person plays the game.
