So, before the game was titled Halo 3: ODST, it was announced as Halo 3: Recon.
Does anyone know what was planned for Halo 3: Recon if it came out as such?

The exact same game we got. All that changed was the name.
this^
I don’t think that’s true. I remember seeing something that said otherwise.
It was originally halo 3 dlc but got so big they made it its own game and added firefight.

Ya this is what I remember. It was also supposed to retail at only $40. Thanks for upping the price Bungie, 343 made Halo Anniversary retail for $40 and your game ended up costing everyone $60.

That wasn’t Bungie’s fault. Microsoft charged made them charge $60, so as a compensation, Bungie gave us all the maps.
And before it was Halo 3: Recon, it was Halo Chronicles.

Halo Chronicles was actually a completely different game, which was being made by Peter Jackson’s Wingnut Interactive. The only similarity between the two games (based on what we have hear dabout Chronicles) is that both games are about regular soldiers rather than Spartans.

What happened to halo chronicles though. I never did find out…?
Canceled.
Its a shame that it was canceled I will have to add that to my list of canceled games I wanted to be made
Star Wars Battlefront 3
KOTOR 3
Halo Chronicles

In the announcement trailer it was called Halo 3: Recon, then they rereleased the exact same trailer as Halo 3: ODST. No changes aside from the name as they wanted to draw attention away from the Recon armor.
Bit late to jump in but Halo 3: ODST was originally named Halo 3: Recon as it was going to be the only way for all of us to access Recon, it was later changed as mentioned above to draw the attention away from the Recon and more on the ODST game itself.
Recon is a term that is short for “Reconnaissance” which means to gather intelligence and information inside enemy territory.
Recon though obviously had a more cultural meaning to us Halo Players during Halo 3’s reign. Recon was the exclusive armour set only owned by Bungie, some Community Members and Players who earn awesome things and a certain amount of unique kills during the Valentine’s Day Tournament Playlist etc.
So when Halo 3: Recon was announced, everybody obviously jumped for joy believing the title to mean “OMG RECON” in short. The name was later changed to stop the mis-conclusions and mis-judgements that might fall upon the game later on in its life.
Shame… I guess it really does count as being Halo 3: Recon now since the Vidmasters did in fact help us to unlock the Armour Set.

Yes but Bungie sent some employees to work with Peter Jackson, when the project fell apart, the team stayed together and these are the folks who made ODST. So ODST was made by people and resources meant for Chronicles

Halo Chronicles never went past the Concept Art Stage
Halo 3: ODST was being developed for a year after Halo 3’s release by a small team of Bungie Employees while the rest of the company were busy working on Halo: Reach shortly after Halo 3’s release
Get ready for the straight dope.
Bungie had a preliminary agreement for a halo film produced by peter jackson and directed by neil blomkamp. This fell through because microsoft demanded a chunk of money upfront, but jackson and blomkamp had already assembled a team, so blomkamp went on to make district 9 instead with his crew (amazing film, he would have been the perfect halo director) he also made the Halo: landfall shorts too , so this is where the IRL warthog that bs angel drove to Halofest came from. Jackson salvaged the work his team had already done to pitch Halo Chronicles to bungie, who liked it and assembled their own small “ninja team” to assist.
For unknown reasons jackson pulled out (probably to focus on The Hobbit i heard) and Chronicles also fell through, so bungie then decided to keep its small ninja team on the project and convert it into a small expansion and develop it parallel to their next main project (Reach). This project kept growing in scope though until it resembled something closer to a full release, and was originally announced as Halo 3: recon before having the name changed to the more sensible Halo 3: ODST a month later. Microsoft then see the dollar signs again and charge the full release price on it instead of the previously announced $40, which if were being honest was the main fault of the game overall and hurt the review scores quite a bit. MS didnt make the same mistake again with CE Anniversary.
So tldr ODST came from the ashes of a major film project, and in a way it showed. (thats a compliment)
There is a single leaked screenshot of chronicles somewhere out there i believe.

I agree 100%.
Yeah I remember when the trailer for Halo 3: RECON came out, I was like hellz yess!!! Then they changed it to O.D.S.T which was much more suitable. And it ended up being my favorite halo campaign next to halo 3.
