Halo 3 ODST Timeline?

I was playing Halo 3 ODST last night and it occurred to me that Brutes are everywhere in New Mombasa, yet in Halo 2, Elites were the shock troopers. Why are there Brutes and why are there multiple Covenant ships over New Mombasa? I remember from Halo 2 and 3 that a single ship broke through Earth defenses and more ships didn’t arrive until at least a few days later when The Prophet of Truth made it to Earth. Why are there dead Elites in the city? In Halo 2, the Arbiter was killing heretics at this very moment. Elites and Brutes were allies and Brutes shouldn’t have been there in the first place. They were not introduced to Halo 2 until High Charity.

Halo 3 ODST should be called Halo 2 ODST or Halo 2.5. In my opinion, they should just have called it Halo ODST to avoid confusing people who are new to the series.

Just curious about the order of events.

Basically the prophet of truth broke up the replacement of the elites into stages. After regret left earth truth sent brute ships to earth with orders to kill all the elites, take over command and the planet. The idea was that if the brutes took control of the gateway to the ark it would add to the idea that the brutes were superior to the elites. So this all happened before the schism and was reported as the elites failing the prophets yet again. Realistically though, the brutes were designed to be the main antagionists of halo 3 and halo 3 odst used halo3’s game code so re making the elites into the adversaries would have been costly.

Thank’s, I was always a little confused on the gap between Halo 2 and 3 on Earth. I always did think that 3 was attached to ODST more because of the game engine than the story.

its the timeline of halo 2 i believe and is that the time elites left the covenant
