When comparing my brightness to their non-HDR counter parts, setting contrast to 3 and paper white to 4 give me basically identical brightness to the game at 4.5 brightness (minus the highlights, which are obviously brighter). The only game that is excluded from that is Halo 3 ODST. In ODST, the game is quite a bit darker, to the point of black crush in darker sections. Does anyone else have this issue?
Thought I’d throw in some evidence for this:
Here’s Halo 3 in SDR @ 4.5 brightness: https://i.imgur.com/88KIoJj.jpg
Here’s Halo 3 in HDR @ 1000 nits, 4 paper white, and 3 contrast: https://i.imgur.com/rNkOnFk.jpg
As you see, basically identical.
Okay, now here’s ODST:

Here’s Halo 3 ODST in HDR @ 1000 nits, 4 paper white, and 3 contrast: https://i.imgur.com/l7Tw10N.png
And here’s Halo 3 ODST in HDR @ 1000 nits, 4 paper white, and 3.5 contrast: https://i.imgur.com/w3Ajp1T.jpg
As you see, raising contrast .5 makes it basically the same brightness as SDR, but then every other game is brighter than it’s supposed to be.
Edit: Never mind! 3.5 contrast gives equal brightness compared to SDR, not 3!
