I’ve been listening to the Halo 4 soundtrack, and I think I’ve found a couple of references to Halo 3’s soundtrack.
In the track “Atonement” the Halo 3 piano motif plays at the very end; I’ve checked and other fans have verified this before.
However, no one else that I can find has apparently noticed the other possible Halo 3 soundtrack reference.
In the Halo 3 campaign, during the opening cutscene, the camera pans down through the jungle to show Sergeant Johnson and his Marines gathered around the Master Chief. Some very somber music (mainly string-driven) is playing during this shot, and it just struck me how similar it sounds to the first few notes of the track “To Galaxy” from Halo 4.
Has anyone else noticed this? If so, do you think it was intentionally made to reference Martin O’Donnell and his work?

Atonement has the “Keep what I Steal” piano theme in it.
To Galaxy has the same style with it’s strings but it certainly aren’t the same notes. It’s a common style to open music with that. especially in video games. The slow stings allow for easy cut scene listening.
I see… Thanks for the explanation!

Exactly this. I also want to point out, during the beginning cutscene of the Chapter: Composer, you hear the Halo theme (Halo Wars/Halo 3 version mix), when MC and Cortana view Installation 03

Exactly, and I had noticed the inclusion of the Halo theme in Halo 4; I was really disappointed that it didn’t appear in either of the H4 soundtrack albums.
In “117” you can clearly hear the “Halo Theme” going on in it after the creshendo

Yes, it does; however, the classic Gregorian chant doesn’t appear.
