There were days when the halo 3 matchmaking reached 10000 players around the world on Xbox live, or even more. Nowadays, it barely reaches 300. Why?
In my opinion, the Halo 3 multiplayer is one of the best of the classic games, it has the feeling of the multiplayer from the second game and the big and complex maps from the first one, plus new weapons like the spiker, the turrets, the return of the assault rifle; and new vehicles like the hornet, the mongoose and the elephant; not to mention the new items like the bubble shield, the mine trap, etc.
I don’t know if Halo 3 from the Master Chief Collection uses the same servers from the original game, but something that I’m very sure is that it will never return to his glory years.
10,000? Nah man it was consistently over 100,000 for a long time in its prime. I think MCC Halo 3 still has a good population. It’s the most popular one on MCC.
OG Halo 3 is great, but by today’s standard’s it’s pretty outdated. For example:
- 30 fps: a lot of people simply hate this now with 60fps being the current norm.
- Peer to peer - This system is pretty poor compared to the architecture that modern games use. Even in its glory days, Halo 3 always had issues with connecting to a host in another country. It was frustrating playing at a disadvantage but we accepted it because it was the norm at the time. If this was put into a modern game, people just wouldn’t play it.
- People move on: Sad but true. Even if it’s moving to a newer Halo game, this is bound to happen. Games don’t have long lifespans, especially if the game is not supported by the dev. To be fair on Halo 3 though, 11 years old and still having players is pretty amazing.
- MCC Halo 3 - While it still has issues with connectivity and projectile weaponry, most people play this version as the MCC is pretty much the hub for legacy Halo. Still gets updates from 343 too which keeps people playing.
Halo 3 on MCC is drawing the most attention right now and the tournament scene has had a sudden spike in popularity. While the original Halo 3 isn’t as popular because it’s on the Xbox 360 and the 360 servers are having all sorts of problems right now. People would rather play on a “newer” version because there’s a healthy population and games load up really quick.
I do miss the glory days of Halo 3, though. That was such an incredible time to be a gamer and a Halo fan.
What even is the purpose of this thread?
