Halo 3 maps were better and should be the inspiration for 4’s.
Its maps varied more and actually had a sense of mystery to them. Hanging around on maps like Isolation or exploring Sandtrap was actually kinda fun. Some had a story to them to explore as opposed to Reach’s campaign recycling. The locales varied greatly, sand, snow, fishing/naval outpost, Covenant military world, Earth etc…
Forgewise, Sandbox and Foundry were more interesting/creative compared to Forgeworld. The latter being bigger but more plain and drab.
It’s impossible to make maps as good as that now I’m afraid, the game completely revolves around armour abilities further proving my armour abilities (even nerfed ones) ruin the entire experience.

We have seen 2 maps and maybe 2 or 3 AA’s and you are already jumping the gun? Chill. Wait until we can get a more in-depth view of the maps before you judge.
Halo 1 and 2 maps are the best of the series. They were designed with nothing but gameplay in mind, before the developers tried to conform to a theme, or use player data to influence their design.
They need to go back to the design philosophy behind Halo 1/2 maps.
I don’t really agree with OP. H3s maps were enormous letdowns to me. Reach’ were mediocre as well, but its mappacks were better than what H3 offered in my opinion.
In the end its all irrelevant though: H2s maps were best in the series, and should be the inspiration for H4. No bad maps in that game, all straight up classics

I dunno, H3 mappacks were more interesting as well.
More varied maps, better forge maps, other neat tidbits.
As much as I like Reach (which is a lot more than many other people) I have to agree. Halo 3’s maps brought in variety and great design, while Reach’s had a couple good ones that quickly got old, and the rest were just grey.
Hopefully with 343 focusing the multiplayer maps on gameplay rather than from the campaign, this will go back to Halo 3’s style.
While I certainly hope Forge World makes a return, please leave that to Forge maps made by players. I really hated that half of Reach’s online maps were Forged.

Armour Abilities don’t explain the over-abundance of drab, gray, pitiful architecture and art design.
I miss when FPS games had really surreal stages. Outer space techno pyramids floating above the earth. Volcanos. Now it’s just “GRAY, GRAY, MORE GRAY, ARE WE RIPPING OFF COD ENOUGH YET?”
I really hope(but doubt) they’ll take advantage of the whole virtual reality angle of Infinity and make some REALLY interesting stages again.
I’m not liking the two maps we’ve been shown so far I just don’t like the whole Two Bases Identical flat area,I love maps that are totally different either side like HighGround or Last Resort…

While Halo 3 had better maps than Reach they were still pretty bad compared to Halo CE and Halo 2. CE and 2 are close for me but I have to go with the game that has both quality and quantity. When I played Halo 3 for the first time all I could think of was how terrible the multiplayer maps were. It’s one of the many things that killed that game for me.
It’s true, Halo 2 and Halo 3 had gorgeous maps that made you wanna explore them. I could get high and wander around H3 maps for hours when it came out. Reach’s were kinda… meh.

Reach maps weren’t thought out. Halo 3 maps were thought out but still weren’t that great. The thing that killed both Halo 3 and Reach were the soft roofs and kill boundaries. Halo 2 maps were made for explorers as super jumps were big helpers.
