Halo 3 has not a classic gameplay.

In many topics, when people talk about “classic gameplay”, they refer to H3. I would like an H3 2.0 ecc… I think that Halo 3 has not a classic gameplay.

Bubble shield, regenerator, power drain ecc were called equip but they are abilities, excatly as Armor lock, drop shield and others in Halo Reach, H4 and H5. People must take it on the map ok, but there is a big difference between them and a single overshield in H CE or H2… Overshiled was taked by only one player, H3 equip can be used by more people at the same time. Sometimes it happens that i use a bubbleshiled and my enemy a regenerator… this situation remember me the Halo Reach time… This is not a classic gameplay, imho.

Halo 2 was classic. Halo CE was classic. H3, in my opinion, is the first “mainstream” gameplay of the saga, though it didn’t have sprint.

Well, people often forget they even have the equipment in the first place. Everytime I play, I forget I picked something up, and I forget that I have it, and I forget to use it VERY often. I think it’s more practical and useful in campaign when the situations, or overall, the game isn’t so intense.
Also Halo 3, Halo Reach and EVEN Halo 5 can have classic settings and be called a classic Halo game, You can always remove what modifies the gameplay and go full classic. Equipments are barely used in Halo 3, you don’t always need AAs in Reach (although they give many advantages) and you can always disable the modern Halo movement gimmicks. I never got the chance to experience this (minus Halo 3, of course), but I think it’s simply great.
So, is Halo 3 a full classic title? If the equipment isn’t used or barely used, yes, but if it’s used very often, almost.

There’s no clear definition to the word ‘classic.’ It’s like ‘iconic’ or ‘good’ they can mean different things to different people.

I think that classic gameplay = no abilities.

For abilities i mean:

  • H3 equip
  • Halo Reach Armor Abilities
  • Halo 4 Armor abilities
  • Halo 5 Spartan Abilities.

Yes of course you can remove some things and edit settings to have a classic game in each Halo… but not in matchmaking… my opinion was about matchmaking gameplay.

You’ll have to hope for a classic playlist, like the CE and Halo 3 playlists. Otherwise, Tough Luck.

I always hope for classic playlists… but this topic does not refer to H5, it’s a generic discussion about H3…

I’m not only addressing Halo 5, but the others too. I used the CE and H3 playlists has examples of what could be done to simulate classic Halo on modern Halo games.

ah ok…

I would just define ‘classic’ as something original

I don’t know man. Halo 2 had all that duel wielding and boarding enemy vehicles. And you could use the sword. Couldn’t do that in Halo CE, but you could in Halo 3. So I wouldn’t call Halo 2 classic either.

Each game needs to bring something new. Halo 2 brought the aforementioned mechanics and Halo 3 brought the equipment you mentioned. If those games didn’t include those new features & mechanics and played exactly the same, they wouldn’t be much for sequels, would they? And many of them stuck around a while.

Just because the bubble shield lasted until Reach (or 4 if you count regen), doesn’t mean Halo 3 isn’t classic. It means the modern games borrowed from the classic games.

Actually, “Classic” just means the original trilogy. “Modern” is everything made after. I think it’s less to do with gameplay and more to do with when the franchise milking began. Not that I’m complaining. Lord knows, I love me some Halo.

And games are still introducing mechanics and features. Who knows which will stay & which will go? Will clamber be around forever like vehicle boarding? Will ground pound go the way of armor lock? Who knows? But that’s beside the point. Point is, Halo 3 & Halo 2 are both basically the same game except one has a crappy BR that’s great and the other has a great BR that sucks … and in one, you can occasionally have a bubble. (ok, not quite, but you get my point … I hope. lol)

mm… i think that dual wielding is not invasive as bubble shields, power drain & co… in my opinion ,Halo CE and H2 had a more natural/pure gameplay.

I think Martini does have a point however. The dual-wielding mechanic made the dual-wieldable weapons weak if they aren’t being dual-wielded. It might look badass, but it underpowers the guns. And as such, did evade a bit from the classic gameplay.
