So, I noticed something that made me nervous while I was playing halo 3, and that is the visible flood spores coming from the prophet’s mouth, right next to the arbiter, who doesn’t appear to have any kind of face protection…
In addition to this, in the cutscene after the level “Cortana” it looks like the pelican is about to slide off the cliff before it can take off, but the gravemind appears to gently prevent it from falling, giving it a little push to help it take off… Ensuring that the arbiter (and chief) would make it back to the ship… I’m kinda concerned now that the flood hasn’t really been eradicated, and is spreading around wherever the arbiter goes… This doesn’t seem to have been brought up in any of the following games or trailers, so my speculation is probably in vain, but I want to hear some other people’s reactions and ideas around this.
xdxd you just over-thought things when i first play halo 3 i never thought that and that dont have logic with the recent history, and when someone get infected is like in the moment not years after xd
I agree with the person above me, you seem to be way over-thinking it.
For starters, it was about five years between Halo 3 and Halo 5: Guardians; had the Arbiter been infected something would have occured. Secondly, the Gravemind was trying to prevent them from escaping but let go because the Pelican’s thrusters burnt it, and we all know how susceptible to fire the Flood are. Thirdly, the Flood was never truly eradicated, only the ones in that area. Other Halo rings had/have Flood samples contained as seen in Halo: Combat Evolved and Halo 2.
He was not. He would have shown clear signs of infection almost immediately. Spores very likely take prolonged exposure for infection, unlike infection forms which can do it in one go. And like the others said, that tentacle on Cortana was trying to prevent takeoff.
He can probably thank his energy shields, innate immune system, and luck.
I think the arbiter’s armor, although not apparent, has atmospheric protection. This explains the Halo 2 Level The Arbiter where he was fine breathing outside the station, and how he was able to breath in the flood infested level Sacred Icon.
The Flood had the ability to infect the Arbiter, but chose not to. It doesn’t take much for the Flood to punch through a shield, or break through armor, and the Arbiter’s mouth is completely open. If the Flood wanted to infect the Arbiter, it could have.
This reinforces what’s revealed about the Flood in the Forerunner saga, that it’s not actually intent on consuming everything, rather it is still adhering to the Mantle, and part of ensuring the sangheilli have the chance to reach their full potential involves the Gravemind not taking one of their greatest leaders from them at such an important time in their development.
The Flood’s role is a bit like Revan in the first KotOR game, in that both are threatening the galaxy to strengthen it, to push development, rather than actually being intent on destroying/conquering/consuming it.

When I first played H3 I noticed this as well and got very concerned, but I realised that the flood chose not to infect the arbiter in later years.

hell nah homie my boy arby stay strapped from the flood he got that Dr. Fauci Flood Vaccine™
He definitely didn’t get infected. Personally I think your apprehension is a product of over-thinking the situation a bit. Just from a plot perspective, him getting infected at that point would serve no purpose. Just a good old case of plot armor, really.
Should he have been infected? Probably, there’s no indication that Bungie ever thought that The Flood could choose who to and who not to infect. The shipmaster said “a single flood spore can destroy an entire species” and I’m inclined to believe him. Plot armor is my explanation too like some others.
This looks like some overthinking lol. You’re worried about Truth breathing some gross spores on Thel while in Halo 2 on the Sacred Icon mission, the library is infested and is reeking of spores; and get this, Thel isn’t wearing any sort of mask. Lol, even Sesa Refumee was wearing a mask on the Threshold gas mine.
It might be his energy shielding or immune system, who knows. Or even better, plot armor.
I dont think so.
No, i mean he was perfect in halo 5
