Halo 2's Real Ending & Halo 3 Anniversary

I just finished Halo 2’s campaign for the first time in MCC and my question is: How was it supposed to end? According to Marty O’ Donnell it was supposed to end with a 16th Mission on Earth with the Ark where Master Chief & Arbiter work together to finish the fight on The Ark on Earth, O’ Donnell also said that all of the voice work etc. was done for the last mission. Why didn’t 343 then finish the last mission when they were remastering the other 15 missions? If they had gotten the voice work and script from Marty O’ Donnell or Bungie’s old archive then 343i could of finished Halo 2 as it was supposed to end and fix that awful ending to a great game.

Also I’ve heard rumors that Halo 3 Anniversary might be on its way because its over 10 years old, if that ever happens. Would it be a Halo 3 Anniversary sole release or a Anniversary patch in Master Chief Collection with Remastered levels and cutscenes that we could switch back and forth. To have the whole original Halo Trilogy remastered in Master Chief Collection would of been epic.

It wouldn’t make sense for 343 to finish an unfinished mission. Also that cut mission for Halo 2 doesnt even fit in with the other games stories so adding it in would mess up so much more. There’s several cut missions for Halo 2 that were cut for a reason.

And here we go again with Halo 3 Anniversary. It’s been said numerous times, Halo 3 Anniversary is not happening.

Yeah probably, just would love to have the same remastered bad -Yoink- cutscenes in Halo 3 that Halo 2 Anniversary got. The ending in Halo 2 sucks tho which ruins an almost perfect game, if they had finished the ending that was never finished due to time limits it would of fixed Halo 2 and made it the halo game with the Best story.

Halo 2 with cliff hanger ending included is probably the best story of the collection. For them to go into a decades old engine to retroactively create new content would be such a nightmare it wouldn’t be worth the effort. Especially for only an additional mission that tries to tie up the entirety of Halo 3.

If halo 2 was finished we wouldn’t have gotten halo 3, Bungie simply ran out of time it’s well documented from all involved at the time

The real reason of shorter time to make halo 2 was that … They have finished the whole halo 2 with the ending you are currently talking about in 2002…and was ready to be realesed in 2003… During the initial releasing of the game there was suddenly a problem in the coding of the game(probably in the coding of the release). Then to make it quick.again…they deleted many material from the game : a mission or two… Cutscenes, the original ending, and yeah you might have seen the warthog run in the mission ‘high charity’ . You know the warthog run right… If not check it on youtube… And now if we are to talk about halo 3 anniversary or remaster … Than just forget it. 343 have already denied for the remaster of halo 3…i hope i have cleared your doubts

It wouldn’t make sense story-wise. Let’s also not forget that Halo 2’s original script was RADICALLY different from what we got.
From all we know, 3 entire missions were cut, 2 replaced by a cutscene and 1 replaced by a comic book. Covenant Ship, Forerunner Tank and Forerunner Ship.

Covenant ship would take you inside the CAS Assault Carrier you destroy in the beginning of the game; Forerunner Tank would introduce you to the Gravemind as well as we fighting a Forerunner Tank. As a matter of fact, the gondola we ride in the end of Quarantine Zone was the geometry that was being used for it. Forerunner Ship would take you inside the Anodyne Spirit (the Forerunner ship in the middle of High Charity), having you fight through wave after wave of Covenant troops in pursue of Truth.
Additionally, there was going to be a Warthog run in the end of High Charity (level).

Moreover, there’s also the cut Juggernaut form and a shielded Carrier Form that would likely take another form entirely.

The Battle Rifle was also supposed to be 1-shot, there was supposed to be 2 flamethrowers (one for the UNSC and another for the Covenant). Interestingly enough, the Covenant flamethrower used a model akin to the Ray Gun from CoD Zombies.

The Mongoose was supposed to make it’s debut here and not in Halo 3.

The Battle of Earth was supposed to be a much larger conflict and more focus on it. The E3 mission was radically different from the final product but it was clearly much more ambitious.

The original script also had Miranda betraying Chief and planting a bomb or something on him.

Remastering what was cut would only lead to confusion with those unacquainted with the franchise’s history and Halo 2’s development specifically.

I don’t think it’d serve any purpose for 343 to attempt to remake/finish Bungie’s original intended version of Halo 2. As others have mentioned, it’d seriously mess with established lore that takes place after the events of Halo 2, and on a more practical level, I can’t imagine most players who were there to play the original Halo trilogy would prefer that version to the original anyways. If you’re asking me, Halo 2’s campaign is the low point in that trilogy, but the games bookending it give it meaning and context. A lot of Halo 3’s campaign was designed to mitigate and address the narrative shortcomings of Halo 2.

And while I’d like to see it as much or more than the next guy, Halo 3: Anniversary has been shot down so many times that I don’t even want to talk about it anymore. That being said, if they were to do the “Director’s Cut” of Halo 2 as per Bungie’s original vision, Halo 3 itself would be invalidated
