Halo 2 vista

i finally got a computer that can play halo 2 vista and finally made windows live work with windows 8. after playing the original xbox version and the mcc version, this feels terrible. mcc is the vista version but 343 has made a lot of progress with it. i’m not very good aiming with a mouse, i’m average in most pc fps, but bullets don’t do anything when they hit. the banshee was ridiculous, the same banshee lasted an enemy forever and i never saw it even spawn. i destroyed me and my teammates in tanks with that thing. why is the vista port so different from the original.

I just recently got the pc port a couple days ago, and it plays just fine for me

bullets always hit perfect in mcc or original xbox, this game just refuses to allow bullets to do damage and i know vista is notorious for having terrible hit detection.

MCC is the Vista port by the way, not the original Xbox version. And to answer your OP, Gearbox never gave an official reason as to why the hit registration was so different, everyone can just assume it just comes from bugs in the completely different CPU architecture. You will also notice guns shoot faster, superbounces tend not to work, and button glitches don’t work as easily; all of these come from the higher frame rate and resolution quality.

i know that the mcc version is the vista version, but 343 has fixed some things like hit detection. i still find it odd that they put the vista version in mcc though.

Halo 2 xbox was released in November 9, 2004, halo 2 pc was released in May 31, 2007. so i guess pc had a few upgrades

from what i understand, the only reason they chose it was because it was already 1080@60fps. it would have been easier to use the xbox version and update it to 1080@60fps. same thing with halo ce. they used launch versions of halo 4 and halo 3, so they didn’t use the patches that 343 and bungie took months to complete.

The reason 343 used the PC versions of Halo CE and Halo 2 in MCC is because the Xbox One operating system is basically a heavily modified version of Windows. Since these 2 games were coded for PC it was easier to use them in MCC as the infrastructure of the games was already built for PC use and were already running at 1080p and 60FPS. If they ported the console versions, it would have taken a lot more time and work upping the resolution and frame rate, and risked releasing a product that didn’t look up to par as the other titles in the collection (since they came from an even older gen console than Halo 3/4 that didn’t fully support HD titles).

The reason you couldn’t destroy the Banshee with a rifle is because thats how it works in Halo 2. In H2 the damage done to vehicles is negated by the current vehicle operators health/shield.

So they need to be shot in the body, otherwise the Banshee takes most of the shots working like an extra layer to the pilots armor. Ah, but the only part of the pilots body that you can shoot is their feet, thus a rifle such as the BR or Carbine will not accomplish much unless your entire team is collectively shooting at them. Meanwhile explosive damage and splash damage work wonders against vehicles.

Savvy players will capitalize on this info and have a teammate shoot off their wings so they can fit in smaller places, also makes them harder to hit.

Some Banshee pilots are extremely hard to kill due to lag and the ability to dodge, combined with a super high DPI mouse they can zoom around and turn faster then you have time to return fire.

So how do you kill a H2 Banshee? Use a Sniper Rifle to hit the feet, one or two Rox with lock-on, or a sticky nade. A trick with Rox is to lock on then look up then release, this will fire the rocket up then back down in an arc, or a U-shape. There is less chance of them seeing it or reacting in time, this maneuver is good against all vehicles.

Good players know to control Rox; if only one is available they will often take it and lock it up in the Shee. They might fire all the rockets first so the other team does not capture it if they are shot down.

Without access to the Rox its much harder to take a Shee down, so on to the vehicles to try. Obviously the Scorpion Tank, the Warthog and especially the Gauss Hog. Another Shee is always an option, in your case I’d say they probably stole your Banshee and maybe your Sniper as well, its what I would have done. This prevents either from respawning at your base until they despawn (dropped & abandoned, which is not likely).

Dual SMGs and Magnums do a decent amount of damage against a Shee, usually not enough to kill them without assistance but at least enough to scare them away.

The Xbox One uses the same CPU architecture as a PC, the original Xbox does not. It was easier for them to port the Vista version, might not of been the best decision but it was no doubt quicker.

I’ve only played Halo 2 on Xbox Original and the ONE. How does Halo 2 play on PC, just curious ?

An unhealthy amount of lag is always a common occurrence. Not many players, and hackers. But somehow I had a decent amount of fun with the game.

The major benefit of H2v was the H2EK (Halo 2 Editing Kit) used to make custom maps/assets. Unfortunately it was severely neutered just before release, thus giving the finger to all creative Halo fans on the PC who thought they were getting custom edition v2. They screwed it up so bad they removed a few animations for the Elite biped, thus any custom weapons looked pretty sad especially in first person view because the fingers were not in the correct locations.

And now after all these years (~8 years since H2v came out in 2007-ish) I still have a hard time believing Halo is finally coming back to PC in the form of Halo Online; a hybrid of Halos 3, Reach, and 4 with many new weapon variants. I suppose it was inevitable.

I’ve played H2 on Vista and original. Definitely prefer original Xbox.
