If I were to buy a brand new copy of Halo 2 PC from Amazon today and wanted to play online, would the product key:
a) definitely not work
b) probably not work
c) should work but might not
d) definitely work
Thanks!

It should definitely work, but it wouldn’t be the best investment at this point. The online portion of the game (matchmaking, custom games, etc.) won’t work after July 1st due to GFWL being shut down. You should still be able to play the game’s offline modes (campaign, LAN, etc.) after that point though.
Hope I helped
Awesome, thanks JDHarbs! I’m hoping to grab the online achievements before it shuts down. Just hoping it will also run smoothly on a bootcamped Macbook Pro with Windows 8. Can it be done?
Read the reviews on Amazon. Many say that the product keys on brand new, unused games are no longer valid, and that Microsoft customer support has stated that they no longer support the game. At this point, it seems its only worth buying if you want to play the campaign or custom games.
From what i understand there will be people holding custom servers once the live ones shut down. you may be able to lan-link online by changing the server address list once they shut down to new ones people may host.
Halo 2 PC was never that good to begin with. It was a terrible port for one. Barely anyone plays online, while the community that remained destroyed itself over the span of a few years with constant infighting (I was there), along with drama whenever the matchmaking server went down (It did, a lot).
You’d be better off getting the Xbox version and using Kai to tunnel. Nobody plays Halo 2 PC over system link, opting for Halo PC/Custom Edition instead for a good reason.

It can be done
AND my product key from Amazon was valid. Amazing. Thread solved.
