Halo 2 MCC (PC) - Frame rate/ FPS drops

Specs:
CPU: 3700x, GPU: 2070, 16Gb 3600 RAM, NVMe SSD.

My CPU utilisation is only 10-25% and my GPU utilisation is only at 60-70% yet I get HUGE frame drops from 140fps down to 50fps whilst playing with the ‘unlimited’ frame rate setting turned on. Whilst playing at 60fps, frame rate drops down to 28fps. Again… thats with my GPU only being utilised by 60-70%.

It makes the game borderline unplayable and I have died multiple times as a result of the frame drops causing the game to freeze up for a second or two. I’ve read that it could be caused by the ‘unlimited’ frame rate option but, capping the game to 60FPS still causes frame rates to tank sporadically.

Is 343 aware of this? Are they working on a fix?

P.s - I am playing the game pass version, if that makes a difference.

I get FPS drops in some bigger levels on Anniversary graphics, like at the start of Regret and Delta Halo. It goes away after a while, but yeah I’ve seen numerous reports of others getting FPS drops and the known issues list doesn’t seem to acknowledge this problem as existing. And it has nothing to do with uncapped FPS.

Same with me. Stutters across H2A’s campaign On PC, with 95% stutter consistency at checkpoints. This makes it pretty much impossible to play. The worst thing is seeing how it seems to only affect some people on not others when looking this problem up. I’ve spent the better part of the last 72 hours trying to figure out why my brand new PC could be struggling to run a game that was effectively released 6 years ago on what is soon to be outdated hardware.

I have an rtx 2080 super in my computer and the OP of this topic has a 2070.

Just bumping the thread i’m getting the same thing. Start at 200 fps and it gradually drops to 45 FPS even in the old halo graphics mode. Even when it drops to around 100 fps the game has so much stuttering at that point it feels like playing at less than 20fps. It’s made the game unplayable to me.

Specs are Core i9-10900k, RTX 2080 Super, Gen 3 NVME SSD.

It just doesn’t make any sense.

Also happens on new Xbox Series X.

opened up case. I got a reply. Then confirmed issues still happened after latest update.

2 weeks later no response still.

It feels like maybe they have no plans to addressing this.

YET XBOX WANTS TO GET ON THE LEVEL AS PC OR SONY?!?!

Frame rate issues on flag ship games should be 99% addressed and fixed****

I also have this issue. (Bump because I want a fix too) Also, I’m on Steam.

Specs for the record:
AMD FX™-8350 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030

I’m having this issue too. Game runs smooth as butter, but then fps tanks, sometimes freezes for a few seconds. Tends to be bigger areas or start off some levels.

my specs are 10600k running at 4.9ghz and 3090 fe

Still an issue, makes it not worth playing!

Yea fix it 343 please its laggy in big open areas thats the thing with br scope and sniper scope in long sight lines its fps drops and lame for h2a pc aaaaa reeee fix pl0x

Yeah, same issue. Playing on the series X with my girlfriend, and I just switch to old graphics because it looks like -Yoink-.

It’s also wack as can be since I didn’t have this problem on my xbox one.

This won’t help any of you console players but reinstalling windows fixed this for me.

I don’t know if anyone still looks at this thread but it’s due to highly inefficient loading. Whenever you hit a loading point the game will freeze and stutter no matter the specs of your system. This all comes down to halo 2’s rather bad coding. This is why 343 can’t simply fix it, they would need to overhaul the entire game, effectively remaking it.

It’s an old issue. It dates back to the original release of halo 2. The frame drops are caused by messy coding on bungie’s part. It’s not 343’s fault, and to fix the coding you would have to remake the entire game from scratch, bar assets of course.

what

Same but this happens across all games for me

I’m glad I’m not the only one having issues. I have a Series X, and I’m getting drops and some minor screen tearing on Halo 2 Anniversary. Is this normal?

From the Global known issues post on the Halo Support site:

  • In Halo 2: Anniversary, while in Anniversary Mode on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X|S, framerate drops can occur.

I play on Series X as well and noticed huge drops on Outskirts at the beginning when you are on the roofs looking towards the palm trees in the courtyard. I was pretty surprised how low it dipped. I just upgraded to a 120hz TV with VRR and in the same part on 120hz mode, the frames dip to around 80 or so but it’s not as perceptible due to VRR. However this should really not be an issue in 60hz mode to begin with, I know they have always had issues optimizing it buts it’s annoying for sure.
