Halo 2 laso black eye skull issue

When I was attempting to start the halo 2 laso campaign playlist I noticed the black eye skull was not giving any shields for melee attacks. I looked it up online and watched a few laso guide videos as well and people say you get shields for meleeing dead bodies, boxes, glass, enemies, etc. I’m just curious if this is a bug or something. The only thing that I’ve found to replenish shields is to actually melee kill an enemy not just meleeing them like the skull indicates. Any advice or explanation would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hi, so i actually tried the Laso with the same skulls except Blind, here’s what i found out:

  • You regain full shields only when you melee Kill enemies, allies and destroy turrets, vehicles(or flood corpses), with anything but energy sword; - You can charge into the Overshield by doing the methods listed above; - Meleeing enemies, allies, boxes, glass etc… does not regen your shields.

Yeah the shield only recharges from a melee kill, not from just a melee

The statement about not being able to melee boxes for shields is incorrect, specific objects and boxes will grant you shields but not all of them. You can see this when punching some of the smaller boxes and first aid kits for a long time on Cairo station or destroying the floating objects on Gravemind right before the grav lift in the first section. Only certain objects work though.

Not being able to melee allies for shields is also incorrect, there are plenty of times where it will be in your best interest to betray allies for shields. However only killing marines/covenant that are not major characters will give you shields.

Learning what you can and cannot get shields from is definitely key to surviving Halo 2 LASO. An easy way to check aside from looking at videos would be to start a mission on easy with black eye activated, find a way to drain your shields, then punch anything you think might give you shields. With blind off it would be easy to see when your shields go back up and how much they go up by, some objects give more than others as far as I remember. Also as Legend said it is true the sword will not give you shields so to make life easier learn how to melee cancel (get a melee hit, immediately press reload, then you can melee again quicker) if you haven’t already. And also true that if you melee things long enough you can get a 2x overshield.

I actually meleed all boxes, even the smallest ones on Cairo Station and my shields didn’t recharge; same with all allies while one-shot, nothing happened. I got my shields back only when i melee killed them. That’s odd…

Whatever you’re meleeing needs to get destroyed/killed in order for it to recharge your shields. So if you’re meleeing an Elite or a Marine for example, you need to keep meleeing them until they’re dead and then you will have regained shields from them. You’re essentially like Dracula with this skull on lol. And for boxes or vehicles, turrets, etc. again the same rule applies. You need to keep meleeing the object until it is destroyed and then you will have regained shields from it. This method for the Black Eye skull is exclusive to Halo 2 only.
