I have often wondered why Cortana simply doesn’t just detonate the In Amber Clads reactor when the Flood take over High Charity.
Now yes she probably didn’t want to die, seems fair enough, but surely she should have put the Galaxy ahead of herself.
Has this ever been addressed in the canon?

Good question… I may not know the exact answer but here is a potential theory.
Perhaps she didn’t know if that would kill them all? The detonation of a Halo ring is a lot more thorough when it comes to wiping out the flood versus detonating a UNSC ship reactor. It’s known that flood even survived when Chief and Cortana detonated the Pillar of Autumn’s reactor to destroy Installation 04

Aye that would make sense.
Perhaps the Gravemind had disabled the reactor as well.

Yeah, your theory is pretty sound as well… But I think you raise a pretty good point; despite our thoughts for potential reasoning as fans, it would be nice to get some definitive clarification from 343i regarding this matter. As I’m contemplating this, I also remember that Cortana needed Master Chief to help detonate the reactor of the UNSC Pillar of Autumn in Halo CE. And as far as I can tell, there was no real good way for her to get, “aboard,” into the computer network of the UNSC In Amber Clad since she’s in High Charity’s system.
I’m wondering why it wasn’t answered in Human Weakness? That was an entire short story dedicated to Cortana’s time being tortured by the Gravemind. Stating that the Gravemind stopped her or that she found a better solution would have sufficed.

Yeah not having the Chief to assist her may be the reasoning, but like you said it would be nice to get a reason from 343 on this.

Yeah it would have been really easy for them to give a reason in that. Even just a passing comment or something.
“a solution to stop the flood” -Cortana recording
“I’ll find cortana’s solution, and I’ll bring it back” -CHief
It was a plot hole Halo 3 never answered, what solution?
