H5 named Blandest game of 2015 (Zero Punctuation)

Sauce for those interested.
New category for Yahtzee so you can’t really compare it to last year’s awards, but yeah, Halo 5: Turdians was named the blandest of the bland for 2015. It shares the title with games like Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and others I can’t remember and can’t be bothered to watch the video again to see because, well, bland.
Interestingly enough, my two favorite games this year, Elite: Dangerous and Undertale, made number 2 and 1 respectively on the “Best of” spot.
And I hear you, raging fanboys angered by this topic’s very existence ruining your 343i-teet-sucking-session, Yahtzee is a PC gamer above all and Halo is just the sort of big franchise title that’s so very easy to bash from a PC gamer’s perspective-- but as someone who’s not a PC gamer and has played every single Halo and has mostly enjoyed every single Halo (up until now), I have to agree. The game does very little to add something new and refreshing to the franchise, just rehashed gimmicks from other FPS titles. Not to mention the content that made Halo, well, Halo, and not Space Call of Duty Advanced Armored Sociopathic Space Marine Warfare, is oddly missing from the game. More than half the gametypes that worked very well with Halo’s sandbox have gone missing without so much as a “Have you seen this gamemode?” label on the side of a milk carton. Plus you can throw any idea of this Halo being another Halo with couch co-op or LAN parties into the crapper, because it has neither. Oh what’s that? Your internet down or Lizard nerds being Lizard nerds again? I’ll just play Forge until— ohhh wait nevermind it’s online-only.
My friend started sounding like a parent worried about their depressed teenage child, because he keeps telling me “It gets better.” I’m having a hard time believing that though. Every time I look at 343i’s recent business practices I don’t get a sense of “We hear you,” but instead “I can’t hear you over the millions you already gave to us, suckers”. We get free monthly updates which basically means “This game was not finished at launch so we’re adding stuff over time and calling it free,” but even those updates feel hollow. People have made list after list and “demand” after “demand” on things the whole community would like to see come to this game in the future and we’ve gotten very few of it. Instead we get a fix or two here and there for things like the atrocious aiming or file sharing, but the bulk of these updates seems like things they’ve planned for a while and don’t actually fix any of the problems with the game. Several of the ‘new’ maps were shown pre-release either as concept art or promotional material (I’m looking at you Battle of Noctus), and I’m sure more “remix” maps are to come which have nothing to do with the lack of gametypes or social aspects that the game sorely…well…lacks. More randomly-“earned” cosmetics and weapons instead of actual requirements and ways to get them (I’m looking at you Achilles Armor; a step in the right direction but we need a lot more done like this and not just for the new stuff going forward).
Voice your blind defenses with the age-old “That’s just your opinion” line or agree with a smash of that like button. And discuss if you agree with Yahtzee or not and why, and please try to use common sense with your responses.

That’s the 343 fanboy attempt to argue that halo 5 is the best game ever. He brings up a lot of good points

Yahtzee has said things that have annoyed me greatly in the past. He’s certainly not infallible.

I agree with his conclusion, and I think he’s a decent reviewer, but I really don’t care one way or the other whether Yahtzee said it or some random person off the street said it.

> Interestingly enough, my two favorite games this year, Elite: Dangerous and Undertale, made number 2 and 1 respectively on the “Best of” spot.

Hell yeah. Easily one of the best games I’ve ever played. I have so much praise to give but I’ll restrain myself.

So I have to admit the videos list was pretty much spot on and OP’s long wall of mega text is also spot on

Who is Yahtzee and why do I care about his/her opinion?

Halo 5 is so far from being bland. Gameplay is flawless, maps (though few) are great and the over all experience is one of a kind. My only real complaints are a lack of game types, maps, and customization. Customization being the only one that won’t be fixed through updates.

Gameplay is flawless? I can hold my own in games without even shooting, just sprinting around like an idiot using the melee abilities. This would not be possible in a well designed shooter, and was not possible in early games in the series, the superior ones without sprint and goofy abilities.

Now I want to see someone get a Perfection using only Spartan Abilities…well, I don’t want to see it, because that would sum up everything wrong with the new meta, but it would be some pretty good proof that they ruined the FPS sandbox with all the new melee and mobility stuff.

Yep. Halo used to be a tactical arena shooter, the perfect middle ground between tactical shooters like CS, and intense arena shooters like UT. Now it is just a brainless arena shooter, without the benefit of a high skill gap like UT.

And it’s completely deserved. Tied with Battlefront.

I don’t understand how his arguments about the story made it “bland.” Listing things and then just saying they are bland without explaining why isn’t a valid argument. It seemed like he was arguing that it was bland because it used the same characters…

Geez, I just can’t understand people’s halo towards Halo 5’s story, I just can’t.

And seriously, he didn’t put Witcher 3 as best game of the year, his opinion is invalid.

“His opinion is invalid because it’s not my opinion.”

Mmk.

Not that I’m saying Witcher 3 doesn’t deserve it. But it’s also not the only good game that came out last year. Elite: Dangerous is another game that sure as hell could compete with W3.

His is the first video or top ten I have seen that didn’t put W3 as best game overall, and he does have a reputation of going against popular opinion just because.

He’s also the one that said Portal and Undertale are literally flawless… my god…

His opinion is invalid because he doesn’t take the time in a video of five minutes with 14 other games to argument just why he thinks Halo 5’s story is bland. Why should he dedicate time to that?
As Silent once said here, pro-sprinters are put undee far less scrutiny than anti-sprinters. You like sprint, alright. You dislike it? Bring out your game design documents because it’s halo redesign time. Same seems to go here. You like the story? Good, dislike it, Why on earth would you do that and you need to go indepth with it.

Then you simply do not understand it.

Really? You hold the ultimate opinion on gaming?

For the campaign I can see his point, but the core of the game play is extremely sharp and refined.

I really couldn’t care less about Yahtzee’s opinion. Or anyone’s really. I’ll form my own opinion.

Yeah I’ve seen this guys review two but I completely disagree with his opinion as well that’s all it is nothing to get worked up about. How the hell Undertale and Elite Dangerous made it into the top games is beyond me as Undertale I just don’t personally get it’s just a random -Yoinking!- weird mess of a game IMO and Elite Dangerous is IMO pretty boring as there isn’t that much to do it takes too long.

Also ROTR is imo maybe the best game of last year so how that got one of the blandest game awards I don’t know. I could understand Halo 5 getting a disappointing game of the year award but not bland as the gameplay etc is pretty solid but the lack of missing features/game modes etc is very disappointing.

Typical FPS gamer these days.
