H4's soundtrack: Davidge or O'Donnell?

Since the launch of Halo 4 the fan community has focused in on H4’s Campaign and Multiplayer. To say that the debate has been heated would be an understatement. So far (IMHO) Halo 4’s soundtrack has been over looked.

Here are my questions to you:

  • Does Halo 4’s soundtrack “feel” very Halo to you?
  • Did 343i make a good choice when they chose Neil Davidge?
  • Was Martin O’Donnell an essential piece of the Halo puzzle?

please dont duplicate threads for attention.

Not really.

His music is decent but nothing unique or memorable. Mostly just generic electronic music, one of the songs even sounds almost exactly like a song I’ve heard in games before (the one on the last mission). I don’t know the name, but if you play the Fortwars mod for Gmod you should know what I’m referring to.

Martin O’Donnell is nothing short of a musical genius in my opinion. They aren’t even in the same league. I’ve never heard music like that before.

I enjoy Niel’s music a lot, but I don’t think anyone will every fill the shoes Marty left. He just put something into his music that made it so legendary.
I literally listen to Halo music, mostly by O’Donnell, every single day.

So do you flame everyone who starts a thread? I asked a legitimate question about a gaming franchise that I care about. I don’t see how that was a cry for attention.

You made 2 threads that are the exact same. He wasnt flaming you. he’s just saying you dont have to make 2 threads exactly the same.

For my part I respect Davidge’s work but it’s too “generic sci fi” for my taste. (Better suited for Star Trek.) I really hope that O’Donnell returns to Halo in the near future.

I think the Halo 4 Soundtrack is garbage. I would have been glad if they just recycled music from the previous Halo games. Whenever i play Halo 4, i just soundtrack the Halo 2 soundtracks and the ODST soundtrack from my hard drive while im playing, because the music in Halo 4 just seems out of place. Hopefully Davidge wont be back.

OK thats weird. I don’t know how that happend. I hit post only once, after I changed the title from “Love it or Hate it” to “Davidge or O’Donnell”. I’m sorry for the confusion.

Go listen to CE’s Truth and Reconciliation track (#2).

Start @ 1:50 …

NOW THAT’S HALO

EDIT: TURN THAT BABY UP!

Halo 4’s soundtrack is actually really well done musically speaking. The only issue with the soundtrack was the placement of each track and the mastering levels.

Alot of the games’ better moments where an awesome soundtrack kicking in would have upped the wow factor had the music become muffled because of game audio/voice communication. That, as well as certain tracks being placed awkwardly etc. led to issues even noticing the music in the first place.

Listen to the OST on its own. It’s absolutely awesome. My favorite tracks are:

“117” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCrL76vGpNA

“Nemesis” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDoG_SwvBV4

I love Neil’s work but Marty was better for Halo.

Halo 2 and ODST’s soundtracks were my absolute favouirte.

When I played HAlo 4 I rarely noticed the music, only the atmosphere it created. For any other game, this would be a laudable thing. After ten years of Marty, this is one of the worst things that could be said about a Halo game’s music.

They tried a new sound, which in some places worked, but overall, it meant a more richly textured background sound that changed for the tone oft he mission. It reminded me of a movie soundtrack, where there are two or three actual songs on the CD, and the other fifteen are all atmospheric background music. In the previous Halo soundtracks, this didn’t happen.

Neil is very talented, and I love the creativity and uniqueness he achieves in his sounds, but after playing the game, he felt like a student trying new things, while I was waiting for the master to show up and knock it out of the park. I hope they find another composer for Halo 5 - one who is more suited to the franchise.

Why not both?

You know what they say right? Double D’s are the best.

I like what Davidge did. I don’t have a problem with it at all.

Both are good, but I grew up with Marty. Its hard to listen to his music for ten years and then get a new composer. So I prefer Marty

Marty is amazing, I’ve meet him in person, he has an awesome personality and his music is awe-inspiring. I think Neil did a great job with Halo 4’s OST. It fits the game well. I even listen to the H4 OST on my iPhone daily, I like it that much.

FINALLY someone who understands! This is what I’ve been saying since November. I have the Limited Edition Soundtrack, and I listened the -Yoink- out of it even before Halo 4 was released. It is absolutely amazing. There are so many gorgeous tracks that can bring you to tears.

The thing is, the soundtrack went mostly UNUSED in the game! Examples:

To Galaxy, the most uplifting of all the tracks, wasn’t given a chance to shine. The best part of it (from 2:34 onwards, if you want to look it up on YouTube) didn’t even make it into the game!! This was one of the first tracks Neil made for the game, and I suppose it was supposed to be an important one. Instead, they only used the beginning of the track (you can hear it in the Infinity menus) and the middle part, but never the BEST part. The part that actually MATTERED… OK, they did use it ONCE… Guess when…? In the intro video of Spartan Ops… Yeah, that’s right… the video that you only see once and will never see again… And even then, they didn’t let the track play properly, they cut it to pieces!

Solace. This one’s almost 5 minutes long and it’s so beautiful. They only used this track for like, what 5 seconds? You can hear a few seconds of this track in the Librarian cutscene in the mission Reclaimer. A comple waste of a superb track…

Awakening. The first piece that Neil made for 343, before he even got the job. This was supposed to be an important track too. I imagined it would have something to do with the Chief waking up from cryo-sleep, but instead this track went completely unused in the game. You can hear maybe 5 seconds of it in one of the cutscenes (and that’s not even the important part of the track).

Haven. You can hear this track when you enter a Forerunner structure in the second mission. But when you ride the elevator upstairs, it’s gone…

Lol ok, maybe that’s enough examples for now. But even worse than the fact that they didn’t actually use Neil’s music is the fact that all sound during cutscenes is muffled and low-quality. And sometimes even during gameplay. And finally, the music is often so quiet that you can’t hear anything.

  • Neil Davidge’s OST doesn’t sound as Halo for me. The best example is “Arrival”. Well-known songs are missing.
  • Another composer could have done worse, or better. The key to create Halo music is following Marty’s legacy.
  • He defined the soundtrack, its essence. I can’t understand Halo without his music.

Dadonell.

'Nuff said.
