H4 is a good game. But not a good Halo game.

For those who have read the subject title and believes that it doesn’t make any sense, I recommend that you leave this thread before you post something (obviously without thinking first) that will, most likely, get bashed on in the near future.

sigh Another hate thread again, right?”

This is not so much your typical “hate” thread that always makes a routine appearance on the forums. This is more-so a reflection thread that I just felt like posting today so please bare with me.

Alright so lets take a trip down memory lane to November 6th. Ask yourself: “How much fun did I have playing my first bunch of games on Halo 4?” If you’re like me then you probably had a blast. All of those new maps, and weapons. It’s great stuff isn’t it! I actually got a running riot in my very first game of Halo 4. I don’t mean to brag. I’m just making a simple point that everyone, in one way or another, had plenty of fun playing Halo 4 on launch day.

Now lets come back to the present day. Are we still having fun…? No? Why not??
Maybe I should have started by asking: Are we still playing Halo 4? No? Why not??? Everyone had fun playing on launch day. So what is so different now?? I thought you guys loved playing on Haven for the 210,647th time. What could have possibly happened to our beloved franchise that caused this to happen??

It couldn’t be because of the boltshot considering that it’s so under powered. The DMR can’t be the reason either since it is extremely difficult to use. Can it be the loadouts and how we can spawn with plasma grenades and plasma pistols thus making vehicles not even worth driving/piloting? Or maybe it’s the ordinance drops… nahh ordinance is what makes the multiplayer completely balanced by removing preset weapons from the maps.
/sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm /sarcasm (I know that the boltshot is getting nerfed)

Alright. Alright. Alright. Since I’ve dropped the sarcasm bomb on all of you, take a few seconds to recollect your thoughts on how you were going to go ape-Yoink!- in the comment section. Now it’s time to take things a little more seriously.

To be honest with you guys, Halo 4 could have been MUCH WORSE than what it already is. But that doesn’t mean that I’m going easy on the franchise nor am I going easy on 343 Industries. The fact that Frank O’Connor, himself, stated that they have made many mistakes regarding Halo 4 proves that the Halo franchise has been slowly heading in the wrong direction. However, it also proves that the Halo Community is strong and that the harsh criticism and “hate” spewing from this community wasn’t meant for nothing. We all have our opinions for a reason.

These opinions (that are now facts) include:

  • Bringing back the Battle Rifle.
  • Removing bloom. (sharply reducing it)
  • Removing the health system.
  • Adding new forge environments.
  • Wiping Armor Lock off the face of the Earth.
  • etc.
These were WONDERFUL features to bring back/remove from the Halo franchise. As a community, we succeeded in allowing our voices to be heard and thus, play a huge role in the development of Halo 4. Great job everyone!!

After Halo 4 was released, despite the wonderful changes/additions to the game, we all noticed that something was horribly wrong.

  • No weapon balance/Map balance.
  • An immensely stripped list of Custom Game Options.
  • No precision editing in Forge Mode.
  • No Forge World 2.0
  • Theater Mode isn’t compatible with Campaign and Spartan Ops.
  • Glitches. Glitches. Glitches.
  • etc.

Unfortunately, the amount of bad changes/additions in Halo 4 completely out-weighs the amount of good changes/additions. It’s safe to say that 343 Industries has been taking 2 steps forward but 3 steps back with how they are handling their product. All in all, new gamers can pick up Halo 4 and, still, truly enjoy it since they are not too familiar with the franchise. That is perfectly fine and it makes perfect sense. Halo fans (like myself) know the major differences between Halo 4 and any other Halo game that has been released. We know that it’s not Halo despite the name “Halo 4” on the cover of the game. However, you can still try your best to enjoy yourself when playing Halo 4. It still happens from time to time. With that being said, I’m out. Have a great day and thanks for reading!

The first thing I said to myself during my first online game was “wtf is this?”

I don’t play many other shooters than Halo, but H4’s mp just can’t hold my interest. There are a lot of superficial things I don’t like about it, but if I just focus on gameplay itself–I just can’t get into it. It seems so stale.
The 343 defense force likes to tell me it’s because I can’t accept change, but the heavy changes Reach brought to the franchise didn’t drive me away. Some people say it’s because I suck at H4 mm. Then why do I feel like it’s too easy?

I wanted to like this game but ended up not liking it. That’s not my fault. Hopefully 5 will be more to my liking.

it has a good halo story though. you have to admit that?

> it has a good halo story though. you have to admit that?

That it does. But, unfortunately, the campaign isn’t enough to bring players back into the franchise anymore.

I don’t buy that argument. It makes it seem like people are desperate to find a way to justify their investment into the game.

A good game and a good Halo game are not different entities. If a Halo game sucks, it’s not a good game.

> If a Halo game sucks, it’s not a good game.

It’s all a matter of personal preference. It depends on what you think a good Halo game is.

If someone, who has never played Halo, plays Halo 4, they would most likely think it’s a pretty good game because they are oblivious to the changes that the franchise has undergone for the past 10 years.

That opinion is reversed when the game is viewed from loyal Halo fans (like myself).

I know I’m going to get a ton of hate for this, but anyways…

Halo 4 is a casual game.

Casual games are fun at first or every once in awhile. Who doesn’t like going on a massive killing spree of enemies, slaughtering everything in your path? Who doesn’t like to relax and unwind in an easy game?

But that gets old after awhile. Casual games seldom ever last long. They come, they hype up their new title and get you addicted with achievements and progression systems, they die off over time, and the cycle repeats.

That’s how casual games work, that’s how they sell.

No hate, you simply speak the truth. The game isn’t very good at giving you something to strive for. Terminals are easy to find sometimes, achievements are fun to get, and commendations will have me playing. But none of that is really adrenaline pumping. We’ll have to see CSR’s impact in April, but for now, it truly is a casual game. I like playlist jumping, the only playlist that really keeps you hooked in my opinion is Team Snipers. I’ll admit, it’s the casual nature of this game that keeps me coming back. Like you stated, who doesn’t like to relax and unwind in an easy game? That’s precisely why I play this game.
A good casual game, but not a good Halo game.

I rage quit my first match when Reach first released. I didn’t like Reach at all even though I played it a lot. I kept hoping it would get better, but it just annoyed me. Halo 4 is much better and I have the “one more game” feeling back that I would get in Halo CE LAN matches, Halo 2 MM and Halo 3 MM. Now if I could only get my kid to stop playing on XBL when I am so I can get a better connection, I’d be all set.
Could some things change to better Halo 4? Sure, but what game couldn’t use an improvement here and there? I do hope theater mode catches up to previous versions though. I haven’t used it very much since it doesn’t include Spartan Ops/Campaign compatibility. I used it all the time in Reach and tons in Halo 3.

I’m a loyal Halo fan. And Halo 4 is one of the best Halos I’ve played.

Being a fan has nothing to do with the quality of a game.

Yes, but this is Waypoint. I think it’s safe to assume that almost everyone here has played Halo. We all know better than those who have never touched the series.

Oh, so your opinion really is the one that MATTERS? Did I get that about right?

I’m not narrowing down this topic to only one demographic (in this case, Waypoint). I’m including all gamers that purchased Halo 4.

I have always hated when they remove the health in Halo to make the game more dumbed down, the BR was mostly from people who thought it would be as OP as the DMR now and that’s really the only reason people wanted it, removing bloom is a bad idea as it limits variety and armour lock could have even been tweaked in Reach, even without a TU, to not be as annoying.

Seriously, don’t pretend like your opinion is shared amongst every Halo player.

I used to think your posts were pretty smart but this one was awfully dumb!

That’s not what he’s saying at all.
