H3 Equipment in Infinite

One thing I would to return in Infinite is the equipment from H3, as I think it adds some strategy to the gameplay. So my question to everyone is, which equipment would you like to return and if you can add a new one, what would it be?

The equipment I’d like to return is: the bubble shield of course, grav lift, power drainer, and the regenerator.

One that I would add would be the ability to create a shield door for a specific amount of time (like the bubble shield). Of course this wouldn’t be usable in objective game types as it would be kind of cheap, but would work well in slayer and BTB.

There is already a thread on this. For me equipment is alright, I prefer armor abilities, as for Spartan abilities they need to go.

The thing with the shied door is that you could use it to stop a game before it starts. Can you imagine a CTF match where a shield door is is placed before the game is over preventing the down to the wire game winning capture? For area denial I would prefer some sort of deployable mines that can be taken in place of grenades. They will detonate after some time but there are ways to disarm them (shooting them) or detonate them prematurely. Of course like the H3 equipment mine there should be a self destruct timer.

Stacking pickup items in the style of Halo 3 on top of all the other mechanics a lot of people seem to want in Infinite (saw a thread the other day asking for all Armor Abilities and Spartan Abilities to be implemented- yikes) is asking for a chaotic mess as far as competitive balancing goes.

Pickup items do have one significant advantage over integrated player base mechanics, though, in that they can be selectively added and removed on a map-by-map, game-by-game basis. That would mean they can be worked into the power balancing dynamic of a certain map just like any other weapon placed on a map, instead of being a constant factor that needs to be taken into account in literally every conceivable design situation.

People are quick to suggest that enhanced movement is fine if it had a toggle, but I believe that’d be a nightmare in how quickly it would fragment the online community for the game and also in how indefinite and noncommittal it would make the entire experience feel compared to prior Halo games. The pickup items do provide a bit of a compromise with regards to this issue, too. Overall I think they’re a better inclusion than enhanced movement and armor abilities from a balancing perspective.

Yeah I agree the shield door wouldn’t work in CTF, which was why I mentioned in my OG post that it wouldn’t work well in objective game types. But could work well in slayer game types as a way of getting away from someone chasing you in a vehicle, or avoiding a potential death if your health is low.

Personally I was never really a fan of the mines in H3 as they always seem kind of useless, but if 343 could find a way to improve on them I’d totally be down for that.

Yeah adding all of those mechanics would be an absolute mess haha. I agree with your point about them being added and removed from maps and that’s why they’re great, and wouldn’t really break the game. The developers and forgers have the option of how many of them to add to each map, and which ones to add depending on the map itself. The beauty of equipment is that you can use them tactically on specific maps, like getting to the laser tower with the grav lift on High Ground.

Haha totally! The possibilities are endless!

My idea of mines, Well I got a concept for UNSC and a concept for Covenant.

  • UNSC Claymore. Explodes in 45 degree cone facing the same direction of the player when it was deployed. Damage similar to frag grenade. - Covenant Needle Mine. Acts like a Bouncing Betty mine. It shoots a pink projectile up in the air which scatters the same homing projectiles as a needler. I haven’t figured out any different ones for brutes and Prometheans. For the Prometheans I guess some sort of sucking black hole mine will work pull people and items close to it an in before exploding. Brutes, I guess just something that throws flaming spikes everywhere.

I would personally rather not see equipment return. Equipment left a bad taste for me (not to the extent armor abilities did). Bubble shield/regen standoffs and power drains were annoying to deal with and good majority were plain useless. Despite Halo 5’s flaws I can appreciate the lack of equipment/armor abilities.

The H3 pickups always came across as cheap and gimmicky to me, even the dual weild mechanic was basically useless mechanic,
I really liked the idea of these until they were part of the game.

Aah loved so much Halo 3’s equipment!

I think they could add some different equipment items though

If we could just have Halo 3-2 in spirit that’d be amazing, thought the chances of that would be unlikely.

The bubble shield needs a come back.

I want to see a return to more of Halo Reach’s gameplay, with more of Halo 3’s equipment and gameplay. I am meaning Dual-Wield, SMG’s, Battle Rifle, DMR, Assualt Rifle, there has been no Halo until Halo 5 that had the SMG, Battle Rifle, DMR, and Assualt Rifle mainly because the DMR is a newer weapon but still. I would love to see basically a mixture of Halo Reach and Halo 3, I want to see every weapon from Halo 3 and Halo Reach. I would also love to see bubble shields and gravity lifts back to but I also want Halo Reach armor abilities.

I have nothing against equipment and I’d like to see them make a return in Infinite.
It’s just a pick up item and by far not as harmful (harmful in my eyes, maybe a welcome addition in your eyes) as Spartan Abilities.
Unlike Base-movement mechanics, you don’t have to build your maps around them. I honestly think that they (most of them) worked great in BTB, especially for King of the Hill & CTF + it really nailed the infantry / vehicle balance in BTB.

However, I really didn’t like them in a 4v4 match.

So: Return > Yes, but just for specific gamemodes, especially in BTB.

No equipment! This is a factor that started the death of halo.

I loved them and reach’s arnor abilities.I hated 5’s Spartan ability. Reach’s armor abilities with no loadiuts please.

Loadouts were a copy of cod.

I didn’t mind the loadouts in Reach in Invasion but definitely keep them out of Slayer.

Care to elaborate?

I think some of them can work well in 4v4 like the bubble shield and grav lift. But I agree equipment like the power drain and regenerator are better suited for BTB.
