Gyroscopic Controller Support

Across a lot of shooters, especially for those ported to the switch, the demand for gyroscopic aim assist has been rising. Analog sticks are arguably the worst way to play FPS games, and the only reason why analog sticks work well enough is because 343i put in a great deal of effort with aim assist and bullet magnetism convincing you that your aim is true. I know most xbox controller’s don’t have a gyroscope (PS4 and switch controllers do), but perhaps Halo could pave the way for the popularization of gyro aiming in FPS with at least supporting gyro for controllers that can take advantage of it. Halo Infinite will be available on PC and it is possible (IMO should be) that it will cross play with console. I don’t think aim assist and bullet magnetism should be removed, but the option to play with gyro would be welcome addition for all gamers.

Here are a couple links to better explain and demonstrate gyroscope in shooters.

The only gyroscopic aiming I’ve used has been in the Wii U Zelda remasters and Breath of the Wild on the Switch. I thought it was really great in those games. You get the comfort-ability of a controller but the small precision tweaks of a mouse.

I would be open to it coming to Halo, but that would mean a new controller too. Unless you are talking about something on the PC version of Halo Infinite. In which case support could probably be added, but I’m skeptical if it would be.

Going to honest OP. I have absolutely no clue what Gyroscopic aim assist is, but if it’s anything like the motion controls in various PS4 games then I’m simply not interested, they are annoying and often immersion breaking. I often have to look around first to make sure I’m not going to smash my hand against a table or whatever. And then it doesn’t count the movement anyway claiming it was in the wrong direction.

I could see this being a good step forward, but it depends on how well it works. Does gyroscopic aiming feel precise for FPS games on PS4?

Gyroscopic aim assist is a combination of using analog sticks and a gyroscope to aim. Sticks for fast movements and the gyroscope for finer movements. Overall the combination is more precise than analog sticks alone.

Here is an example of Doom with gyroscope aim assist.

:open_mouth:
You really know which game to choose to convince someone haha. I’m totally on board based on how smooth aiming looked in that video. I hadn’t really considered the feature before reading your post, but now I truly think it would be great to have in Halo.

That’s… actually really cool. I could see how that could work with a BR or those kind of precision weapons, seems like it would be really nice in Halo.

Gunna plug in a PS4 controller to Doom PC to see how it works. I’ll update this comment when I’ve given it a go.

Edit: Doesn’t look like you can get official motion controls without a Nintendo Switch pro controller, but I set PS4 motion to mouse movement and that did basically the same thing. To say the least, I’m impressed with how fun that was alone. I’ll take a 180 on my opinion here, I 100% want gyroscopic controller support with Halo.

With the emphasis on cross play, I would say that 343 should look into making this an option. I know the Xbox controller doesn’t have a Gyro, but maybe make it easy for people to use controllers that do have Gyros (Switch Pro Controller or PS4 Controller). Gyro Aiming + Flick Stick seems like the future of FPS controller gaming.

Here is a video that explains what Gyro and Flick Stick Aiming are.

I think you have a good point of view on this and it is true that 343 should pave the way for this.
