Saw a poll on if grunts are fun to shoot or not and it got me thinking about the H5 changes to grunts. While lore wise I get that it makes sense they’re outfitted with better equipment like shields and jetpacks to make them more effective, I don’t like it gameplay wise. I miss them as the useless, silly, fun to shoot in the head cannon fodder enemy type. It’s not like they’re hard to kill by any means in H5 but they kinda lost their roll and I hope they revert those changes for H6, but that’s looking unlikely. The exception for me is the grunt mech, that thing’s just too cool and it’s not like it’s a regular force that comes at you in waves so I don’t have an issue with it.
Anyway, do you like the additions they got in H5 and would like to see a return of that or do you like the pathetic grunts from the classic games?
I don’t particularly mind or dislike the shielded ones unless it’s on Mythic Firefight (Jackals should never be the easiest enemy lol). But yeah, like you said, even though it makes sense from a lore standpoint, it was better to have their role be pure cannon fodder.
As long as the shielded grunts are rare like generals or squad captains. They have solidified their role as fodder and shouldn’t try to change from that role. Or they all have shields and you as the player have a major damage boost. As for the grunt mech, I believe there really shouldn’t be more than 1 or 2 on any battle field, or have some serious reworking.
Rather than shielded Grunts, I preferred the helmeted Grunts from Reach(?). I think the idea of having specialized, competent Grunts as special forces units or something is fine, as long as they’re rarer than the standard cannon-fodder Grunt we see normally.
Then again, with the Grunts having submitted to Cortana and the Created in the lore, it would be interesting to see Grunts benefit from that in such a way that makes them a greater threat on the battlefield (aside from just the occasional Goblin).

I have a feeling we’re gonna see some interesting grunt stuff with the Cortana support.

Grunts in promethean Armor?

I can see that. I’m sure she can do some crazy -Yoink- with all the promethean tech and who knows what else she learned in the domain.
I’d much prefer a return to the classic cannon fodder grunts, without much fancy equipment. Each enemy type had unique characteristics and acted a certain way, changing grunts to have shields makes them more like elites and takes away part of what made them fit their niche: a rather weak enemy that uses numbers to as their strength.

Would be cool for sure. But for me, it would be interesting to see the Grunts be relegated to cannon fodder again for the Created. Then they slowly realize that they just traded one cruel master for another and rebel. Could be a way for 343 to spell the downfall of the Created to have their organic armies turn on them when they realize just how cold and calculating the Created truly are.
Then, as I said in another post, Cortana realizes that she can’t remake the galaxy in her own image without starting over from scratch and decides to activate the Array. Then Chief and Arby defeat her and prevent the activation. This could be done from the Ark, but if 343 wants to keep the Spirit of Fire and the Banished out of Infinite, then maybe this all would take place on Zeta Halo.
I think their great for the rare sight on the battlefield.

The benefit is every grunt is fitted into a Goblin so Halo infinite will have the same amount of grunts per usual…just every single one is in a suit with a booming microphone

That would probably great for the Grunts as a species, but it would get tired pretty quickly in gameplay.
You could have them be rare on the battlefield, like maybe one every mission similar to the gold elites in halo reach
I don’t mind the way they are now because they can be easy to kill at points. The problem I have would be grunt mechs. I hate them and I think they should be nerfed if they are in halo infinite. As for shield on the grunts. Well I understand the buff halo 5 gave them but I can agree they aren’t so much fun in groups. Maybe them being useless would be a good idea.
I would prefer a return to the more original form and AI behavior.
In large numbers even Grunts can be deadly, but take out the Elite leader first, and they’ll scatter giving you the edge. This “30 seconds of fun” I really miss and don’t feel when fighting Prometheans. Even updated I look forward to fighting the Covenant over Prometheans, but would like a more classic feeling enemy for Halo Infinite. “If it’s not broken…”
