I have resonantly found out that they removed the grunts methane mask! Making them look much more serious and ugly! But that should not be the point of the grunt! They provide a evil humor in the world of halo. And that mask and silly voice is key! this is ridiculous! That mask defines those evil little creatures and it must stay! who agrees?
I disagree. Halo 4 is taking the franchise in a darker direction, so there should be almost no comic relief.
I do. The Grunts are meant to be comic relief, but in Halo 4, they look more like the Swarm from GoW then the squeaky Grunts that we have grown to hate to kill.
Halo Reach didn’t have squeaky Grunts and no one complained much. Halo 2 had Heretic Grunts without masks and every game after allowed their masks to be knocked off and their mouths to be seen.
They are definitely uglier. But I don’t think the NEED the mask.
They don’t need masks.
> And that mask and silly voice is key! this is ridiculous!
There are many keys that drive a Grunt:
-silly voice
-lack of expletives
-witty comments
-stupid mistakes
-black beady eyes
-appealing skin
-mask
But the most important, aesthetically speaking, is the eyes and skin.
Compare H3 and Reach Grunts to the H4 Grunt.
I prefer reptiles to whatever the -Yoink- the H3/Reach Grunts are. Also, this is much better than updating the classic Grunt appearance and making them look more uglier.
Grunt can kill you, and are still easy to HS. Better to have someone who’s completely lethal look lethal, then someone who’s not (jackal, hunter, brute). I’ve been killed by grunts more often then even elites ^^

They’re arthropods.
Besides, someone already went through about how the Halo 4 Grunts couldn’t have possible have lived on their home planet with that type of anatomy.
I just think that the methane tank should be redone. the blob just isn’t working… We are used to the single and double-spire methane tanks as well as some stripped-down ones from H2 campaign. Maybe a more heretic-style apparatus would be fine, but c’mon…
The removal of the mask is a “meh” topic. The only problem I have with it is the addition of the new gear on top of their heads that just… doesn’t fit. I respect 343i for being gutsy enough to attempt to reimagine a game of legendary proportions, though. We’ll see how it all plays out. Who knows, it may grow on us…

-Yoink-. Comic relief is a principle of good drama. It counterpoints tension with a moment of levity which you can counterpoint again with your next dramatic twist. You can certainly go too far and make a satire of what you’re trying to create but if you have some idea of what you’re doing you can have those lighter moments, preserve the contrast, and add depth to your work.
It’s the shallow, pretentious, crap like Halo Reach which avoid comedy but also avoid any meaningful interpretation of life because it removes a fundamental element of the human experience. Comedy is simply a state of nature which we respond to in a certain way (namely by laughing.) So to slice it out to remove that state and leave a vacuum which nothing else can fill, a hollow shell of a reality which makes the creative work it spurs feel unauthentic and dull.

How does Reach NOT have comedic relief and how is it more shallow than previous Halo titles?
We don’t need masks. Halo 4’s taking a darker route. Sorry, kid, but no amount of begging and/or complaining will change their looks. Besides, they’ve got tubes coming into their nostrils. It shows more variety and more character personality.
> How does Reach NOT have comedic relief?
The grunts don’t speak english, combat dialogue is ducked below just about everything else in any case (so, no Marines, Brutes, or Spartan’s either), and at no point does any character in that game lighten up to reveal under their cold “professional” (though -Yoink- is a more appropriate word) that a greater part of humanity resides within them than just their sphincters.
It’s a dull, tedious, game without an ounce of comedy, satire, irony, or any other lively circumstance. Well, except for a couple firefight voices but I wouldn’t characterize the entire game based on what small contribution those make to the greater, almost Emo, tone of Reach.

And development of the covenant to show that some time has past between Halo 3 and 4. It’s just one of those small details that in itself doesn’t mean much but when taken in the context of the larger fiction of the game means just about everything because it and other small changes like new grunt tech are giving Halo 4 an independent personality.
Even in the books, grunts offered some comedic relief. As a species, they tend to be undereducated and unintelligent. There are exceptions (Such as Yayap and a few others) but the norm remains. Also, you really can’t expect a lot from a species who was designed so that their head was at the perfect height to shoot, lol.

Someone pointed out that nearly every member of Noble Team is seen without their helmets, and they theorized it was because they did not want to be seen as suits of armor, but rather as people. Hell, three of them died with their helmets off, and even though Kat had her helmet on, it didn’t save her from death.
