I don’t really care for the new Grunt look. The pending change of the Grunts reminds me strongly of the change the Brutes went through in Halo: Reach. The (Japanese?) developers seem to be aiming for a more vulnerable, primitive and unintelligent look in the Covenant forces. The matter of fact is, that they are the exact opposite.
That being said, I’m happy as long as they get some body armour and a smaller head.
I’ve always enjoyed a reasonable explanation for why they don’t die when I fire a few rounds in their guts, and I certainly don’t need any help getting headshots. Halo is already based too much on the “precision weapon vs head” gameplay-style these days.
DISCLAIMER: I just wanted to get this off of my chest. I already know that nothing will change, because the developers doesn’t really care about what the very fragmented forums say. I can’t say I blame them.
I don’t hate the design, and while things about it irk me, it’s not a huge deal.
BTW, good comparison, OP. I remember the uproar on B.net about how the Brutes looked in Halo Reach. It’s kind of funny, because I supported the new look back then.
It’s not really a big deal as far as it’ll change the game for me. I mean yes they look different but it isn’t bad. Who knows, maybe they’re savage grunts =P
and just so you know if you have the gameinformer magazine with master chief on the cover that just came out, on page 43 bottom pic, the grunt shown has a helmet on

Fair point, their current state may be a reflection upon the state of the Covenant in the aftermath of the events in Halo 3.
I’m still a bit put off by the size of their heads, though.

Could you send me a link? I’m really curious about how they look with their faces covered.

When you’re in the process of making a Reply, you’ll see a button on the top of the “tab” that has an image of a planet and a chain, click it and copy/paste the link in the first tab that pops up, then write whatever you wish to name your link in the next tab that pops up.
EDIT: Hehe, I misinterpreted your question. To post a picture you just upload it to imageshack or whatever and copy/paste the URL. It’s how I uploaded the pics in the OP.

yea i just copied the link. should be above the post you edited on
To me, they look way more viscious and alien that their previous cute, colourful ‘this is no threat’ being. That doesn’t mean I’m quaking in my boots, but it definitely adds an element of fear, similar to how wretches scare me in Gears. Not because of size, but because of… well, teeth.
I am so confused right now. Where did the (Japanese?) part come from?
OT: I’m not the biggest fan of the new Grunts, just like I don’t like the Reach Brutes. My problem with them is simply that all the Covenant species are starting to look too similar to each other. Reach removed the Brutes fur, the feature that really set them apart. They looked like Halo Wars Regret on steroids. The new Grunts look too similar to the new Elites with a little bit of Reach Brute thrown in.
They look the same to me as they always have idk, I think every species has changed over the course of the games due to graphics mostly. The only changes i really see is the arms, the arms always had scales and a spike at the elbow but they seemed to have more spikes in halo 3 and reach. But I like there new look for the most part, they dont look like the friendly critters anymore those teeth look mighty sharp :).

Well what people are upset about is that grunts are arthropods with an exoskeleton but in Halo 4 they seem to have skin. This changes their entire anatomy.
