Question: I’ve yet to play Firefight since the Overtime update (which I love by the way… the return of Oddball? More commendations? Sign me up!). I recall that when I was pursuing Warden kills, the only way to get credit on the commendation was the be the one to hit him with the final shot… just shooting him at the same time as others didn’t guarantee you’d get credit for the commendation. Yet I heard that Grunt Mech Destroyer might be different, which would be WAY easier if that’s the case… so… for those of you currently tackling that commendation, does it have to be the final shot to get credit, as it was with Warden kills, or is it just for contributing to the Grunt Mech’s death?
It has to be the final shot. You’ll know you got it because you’ll get a grunt kill medal along with the boss kill medal. Using a scorpion has been working fairly well for me.

You can scrape the final shot with a variety of weapons, but you’ll have the most luck with the tougher ones like the Answer or Arclight. Vehicles like the Anti-Air Wraith also work well.

It has never worked for me before. I literally just tried it again with the Arrow of Time sniper and after all 12 shots he was still running around.

Damn, sniping the hood is what I’ve been trying. Seen some people in videos use a normal sniper and take them out pretty quick, seen others take them out in 2-3 shots from a Binary Rifle.
Thanks guys! Sounds like I need to look up this trick as well… it’d be much easier to just snipe him out of it instead of hoping you get the final shot in. Not a huge deal if I have to go the latter route though… I’m not going anywhere when Halo 5 is still the best shooter on the market!
I agree about the why so secretive part. The chances of running into people who will see this thread are slim and then you have to get a Grunt mech round with them. It’s also been mentioned before on here how to do it although it’s not often.
The traditional method isn’t that bad either, but you just have to time your final shot. I’m already on level 3 doing it that way.
It only took me a few weeks to do it, and I didn’t use vehicles or sniper rifles. You just have to be patient when going for it.
The weak spot in question is directly in the middle of the “face” of the mech or on the “temple” (for humans that’s in between the eye and the ear) of the mech.
No need to not share this.
Binary rifle shots to the nose of the mech. It’s much harder than it sounds though.

Solo killing:
damage boosted sentinel beam OR sorrow of teash. Shoot in glowing hood until it goes away (will go from yellow to red to not being there) and then head shot grunt.
4 standard splaser shots to hood, headshot
experimented with twin jewels sniper and it might be doable
sent. beam and teash can be done w/o DB if you have a buddy

Does the canopy recharge its health if it doesn’t get hit for a few seconds?
And do AoE weapons hurt the canopy if they don’t get a direct hit, but the canopy is within the explosion radius?
I watched unyshek take out the shield with a plasma rifle then with his H2 BR shoot him in the head. He made it look so easy.
damn it. I thought I was the only person in the world aware of the secret.
I can kill the grunt in 10 seconds. Just take out its shield with sorrow of teash and shoot it in the head.
I didn’t know about the sniper trick though.
