Anyone with some source links, hands on gameplay or developer interview please post about groups and what that feature entails.
My speculation about the official statement: “Create, track and manage groups” -
Groups are totally unknown right now. So far we have the above statement and nothing else so we’re currently assuming groups are part of the game/website for Halo 4.
Personally I think groups are just a Waypoint website feature, maybe app feature or xbox Waypoint game feature to “group your friends together for statistics comparison”.
However as for groups = clans I think that is out the window. After all something as big as clans would make the competitive and casual communities unite and go ape -Yoink- for preorders. The current timing we have until launch I’d think something like clans would not be under wraps any more.
My personal speculation is groups are just like B.net groups, nothing in game related at all but a website to generally link your friends together.
I still hold out hope that groups = clans, it’s just not likely any more.
For reference this is how Clans in Halo 2 worked:
Halo 2 Xbox supported Clans and Clan matches in the early stages of it’s release. Like leaderboards from Halo 2 & 3 the Clan system was abused in Matchmaking and Bungie subsequently shutdown the tracking for Clans. From this point forward Clans more or less became just another friends list. When Clans were active it made recruiting “real”, created closer skill matched games in terms of teams and promoted competitive play in the existing sandbox/settings. Clans games with the clan playlist had two options to play a game, a 4v4 and an 8v8 which both mixed objective and slayer gametypes.
I am baffled that we have not seen clans since Halo 2.
It was a great feature and used my a great amount of the community members whether it was for Clan Matches or just a gaming community to have fun together.
I wish they brought it back, and I hope it is clans…

Clans were great back in Halo 2. Fell apart when H3 came out because it became “oh add this gamertag, put this in your bio blah blah blah”
was much simpler to join, play with members, and manage with the in game system

It was a great clan system Halo 2 had, for some reason xbox live removed the ability when they moved to xbox 360 and a new xbox live platform.
They said something about clans just being used as a second friends list. This is incorrect though as there were two clan specific playlists, sort of like Clan Battles we have now but built right into the Halo 2 game.
I too wish for its return and I still wonder how developers have missed this in Halo 3, Reach and potentially Halo 4. Seems like a wasted opportunity.
yeah bungie commented on it before Halo 3 saying Xbox said no to them because it was a second friends list… but i dont see the problem
it was rarely used for that, because that would mean those 100 people in the clan all had the same “second friend list” its not like everyone could have their own 2nd list.
Gaming communities like XGC, KSI, MoB, etc all brought thousands of people together for an enhanced experience (although, it did cause drama sometimes)
Even a clan system like BF3 where it shows in game, but is managed on the website would work great.
So many options that would work to bring back clans… i hope its not gone forever
