Ground Pounding Vehicles Is Pointless

I am a huge fan of the ground pound. When used successfully it is extremely satisfying. However, countless times I’ve been able to pull off very difficult ground pounds on moving vehicles only to do no noticeable damage to either the vehicle or any passengers. Here is just one clip from yesterday:

GP Gungoose Fail

I have also ground pounced the Wraith on Entombed, on top of the driver, with no real consequences aside from being on top of the Wraith. Of course instead of jacking the vehicle I jump into the turret and die, but that’s a different problem. While Assaulting the Fortress on Summit, some teams will spawn a ton of vehicles to prevent capture. Ground Pounding is perfect in this situation, but does nothing. So frustrating. The worst example was on CTF Basin. A fully loaded Hog left our base with the flag, and I was able to pull off a crazy good ground pound from the pinnacle of rock right by the base. I was left scratching my head when nothing happened as a result, not even an assist when the gunner got shot out. They capped it for the win. No smoking vehicle, no broken shields, no dead Spartans, nothing.

The only time ground pounding has any kind of affect is next to the vehicle. The blast of energy can tip over a ghost and goose, or unbalance a warthog, but that’s about it. This defies logic. Shouldn’t something capable of instantly killing a Spartan do Something to a vehicle?

A valid point

Damn. I’m not so pissed I miss on vehicles so often now haha.
I agree, though. It should do something.

I did manage to ground pound the driver out of a ghost once, but I’m pretty sure he was pretty weak to start with. For tanks, I’d just as soon ground pound behind them and board anyway. I do wish it did a little something more, though. If not more damage, at least slow them down or roll them or something.

  1. GPing a vehicle, with intent to destroy it, should be done when it’s damaged. Doesn’t matter the vehicle, you only do heavy damage if the armour/health is already low and you have killing height.

  2. What you showed is an example of where GP’s height should have done more damage to the driver BUT not have killed them. You were not high enough to kill but we should’ve seen a shield pop and then a kill from your teammates.
There is some wonky damage physics against those on Mongooses/Gungooses. Don’t know if it’s connection based of intentional at the moment.

  3. Here is GP doing damage against a Scout 'Hog. If it was a direct hit on me, it should have been a kill, but it wasn’t, so I am satisfied with the results (and of course living).
As I was struck from a height that can kill, you can see my health was heavily damaged from the splash

Very interesting clip. It looks like he hit you though instead of the vehicle, similar to being melee’d as driver. The fact that he was instantly splattered reinforces that IMO. Crazy good pound all the same. I think being in the hog either reduced the damage you took, which is common while being shot at or melee’d even, or the height of the hog actually made the GP too short, similar to my clip with the gungoose. My height was adequate with relation to the ground, which is what counts while standing, but probably not adequate with relation to the top of the spartan astride the gungoose. Although, even an equal level GP is enough to break shields from full health. Regardless, GP’s coupled with Vehicles equals wonky physics. I guess I want my GP to be devestating to vehicles and the passengers since it’s soo difficult to pull off.

Successful vehicle GP

Finally had success! It’s not impossible after all.

Because exactly what this game needs is for the ground pound to be even more powerful, then kids will have no need to ever even use a gun!

Right, you know, because it isn’t possible to kill someone whilst they are charging ground-pound, or even flying through the air towards you, and it certainly isn’t possible to thrust out of the way.

EDIT: While we’re on the topic of ground-pound, I might as well show this clip.

Yeah you’d think a thousand pound Spartan would damage a vehicle moving at a high enough velocity with gravity assisting them

must be Spartan IV’s in this gen 2 armor

Yeah, I’ve tried it on a warthog in Warzone but nothing happened.

Same thing has happened to me, except I got splattered.

counterpoint

ground pound = 2 melees. If the vehicle isn’t going to die after 2 punches then a fully charged ground pound won’t destroy the vehicle.

Success story
Hitting the actual spartan is key.

nice
shame you didn’t get to collect your shiny new ghost ultra prize

Impressive.

Again, Impressive. These clips have restored some of my faith in GPing vehicles.

Somehow this didn’t occur to me, or make sense at the time. GPing a full health vehicle into destruction would be frustrating as hell for the driver. Hitting the actual spartan seems to work. I guess my only real issue is with splash damage. If I GP a vehicle, occupants should be damaged by it. More occupant could spread out the damage, but they should all take damage imo.

As long as you remember:

The Scorpion was on fire, hence why the GP destroyed it… Otherwise, it may have just killed the gunner and hurt the driver.

When you hit the Spartan from proper height, you indeed get a kill and seem to not damage the vehicle.

If you miss the Spartan and hit a full speed vehicle, you may get splattered and give up a Starkiller.

Funniest thing-someone tried to GP me in Team Arena breakout with low shields. smacked him in the knee, and he dropped like a rock. I survived. ^^
