Ground Pound

The term is bandied about here so I imagine it’s common in other video games. But I don’t get out much these days, so I have no idea what it means

So what was that? What’s its purpose? Do we know? Are we guessing?

For all I care it just seems like it was part of the CGI trailer to look cool. I can’t see how a player would enable that ability to begin with. I’m all for new mechanics, but I don’t want tat pound or booster packs to be used in-game. The thruster packs would take away from strafing and making a tactical retreat and could just be used like sprint to get away from a situation. The pound I assume would e a form of melee that does damage around the player and I feel that would be a bit OP.

I imagine a few uses for it.

Fall faster.
Do a shockwave to send stuff flying outwards like a gravity hammer.

Jump then press jump again while airborn?

While I dearly hope it’s only for the sake of CGI, it makes me wonder, why would they show this in the first footage of H5G MM that early.
I can’t imagine it to be a SA, since SA’s are confirmed to be inherently available for every player.

If I had to guess, they are trying to be more open about multiplayer. Multiplayer may be great, it may not be, but the one thing I’m already noticing this time around is 343i is WAY MORE vocal about multiplayer whether it be via a beta or glimpse of information on NEOGaf/Twitter. I may not have faith in 343i yet with multiplayer after Halo 4, but boy do I appreciate the communication. It makes the fans feel like they have been heard and that 343i is taking a new direction with multiplayer. Its reassuring that they are releasing information this early. I look forward to the beta.

In Crisis 3, Air stomps were a base trait. I’m guessing it’ll be the same for H5G.

I think it could be interesting if it was a move that created a shockwave like a gravity hammer, but does only a tiny amount of damage.

If everyone spawns with such an ability, it has to be no more powerful than a regular melee attack. Like a single hit from above to one enemy, taking out shields from the front and/or assasination if hit from the back.

We simply cannot start giving everyone power moves like that a as base ability. Even if its a weaker form of gravity hammer wave. It will get abused, unless there’s a kind of ‘SA meter’ that drains after using such an ability, like AAs.

I can already imagine a few dummies doing this at the start of the game injuring all of thier teammates just to piss people off.

We’ll see where this goes, maybe its actually gonna be fun, but personnaly I think moves like that belong in Devil May Cry of God Of War.

Frank specifically said that some of the things in that trailer were specific to that game ode, with the game mode unspecified. That particular move might well be limited to that game and not universal across all games. Or it might not do much damage at all, but rather just knock people back. Who knows.

Wouldn’t that be a shame. [/NotSarcasm]

I don’t believe a damage dealing ground pound is a bad thing. I assume it would be situational and require players to drop from a specific height. Would be nifty to goomba stomp enemies in a one shot kill from the top of Prisoner. If its not situational, I assume its something you can do while just jumping that does normal melee damage with an added utility bonus like knockback. I’m fine with either.

If its both situational and weak, then it has no point being in the game.

That’s true, I completely forgot about that.

OT: Depends, a simple, zero-damage shockwave has almost as much potential to be abused as a drains-half-your-damn-shields ground pound.

We’ll have to wait, there was sprinting in a Halo 3 teaser, yet sprinting did not exist in that game.

The more I think of it, the more I could see it being a variant of an assassination – a little flourish on a pre-existing action; in this case, hitting/holding the melee button while falling on top of an enemy.

Game-mode specific abilities would be… interesting. I worry that it would be too much variation, especially given the variety of game modes Halo provides and the communities strong attitude toward base traits. It would have to be kept simple, like competitive vs. social. Anything more and it runs the risk of over complication.

Crysis 3 had a system where the higher you were, the.more damage your airstomp did. I hope they use a system like that in Halo 5,
