Does anyone else remember Grifball when it was first added to Halo 5? It was so great. All the spartan abilities like ground pound, spartan charge, thruster, and the like made Griffball far better than the previous versions. Then what happened? They removed shields, removed spartan charge, and increased the Gravity Hammer’s effective range to that of a Blaze of Glory. Accidental betrayals are much harder to avoid, people are constantly slide-hammering, the sword is useless, and spawn-killing is much easier. The melee system is so much worse. I hit players first, but I die instead.
Why must they make it closer to the boring version the original was? Not even the hammer had that much range back then. Why can’t they let it evolve? The kill range and lack of shields removes the feel of getting your up close and personal. With the removal of spartan charge, it no feel less like bros bashing it out with brute strength like a football match.
I know the main complaint of Grifball was the sword kamikaze players. Why? That was so fun. It wasn’t even that widespread. It was great for taking out Grifs and the tactic didn’t always work. It was good for getting kills without having to worry about betraying your teammates. That said, all they had to do was remove the sword’s increased speed and its one-hit kill with the spartan charge. Not remove shields and increase the hammer’s effective range.
Grifball Pro is so annoying. At least the original settings are still available through custom games.
I agree. Spartan Abilities honestly made the gameplay a lot less static and repetitive. And I don’t know what idiot thought enabling betrayals was a good idea.

because of incompetence. The only reason betray is enabled is if the Grif refuses to score the ball and decides to sit in the corner instead. It’s a common thing people do in Reach and 5 so they can boost stats.

I can understand that, but you shouldn’t get booted for it.

its so people don’t intentionally team kill anymore. In Reach Grifball has been taken over by 12 year olds who boost grifball by standing around and afk. If you even kill 1 of them all 7 other players (including your team) continuously spawn camp and team kill you. They added the booting in for that reason in Halo 5 since they don’t want it happening again.
The sword was overpowered before. I wasn’t even good at grifball yet back then, and I went on big multikills with it. It’s much better now, and it is far from useless.
5’ original variant also allowed the hammer to have a ludicrous lunge range while sprinting, which was just plain stupid.
Also I don’t think the hammer’s range was touched (pretty sure it was always really big in 5), it’s just that the removal of shields made it more effective at a further range.
If you want to avoid betraying, then get better at using your radar.
I remember when they said during the Memories of Reach stream that they’d considered removing grifball, what a night that was

Yeah you should, otherwise I can go around killing my entire team for the entire game and I would get no punishment for it

So did halo…see what I did there?

I though it was cancer because of it. But to be fair the only time I liked grifball was halo 3 (it was ok on reach)

Have you not played Grifball or something? The ability to team kill is a huge part of the game. Do you even know why Grifball exists in the first place?
The different abilities were removed because they were overpowered and hard to counter. The new settings are Grifballhub’s official settings for Halo 5. You don’t like it? Well guess what? Those who care a ton about Grifball love it.
The SAs made it a lot more fun imo. I’ve only played maybe 10 games since they changed it and don’t have any desire to play more. The same thing with Breakout. I appreciate that 343 is being flexible but the changes were for the worse to me.

I apologize for not loving Grifball enough. And why are you giving me -Yoink- for not liking it?

I’m not.
It just you complaining about team killing in Grifball in 2017, like nine years since it’s introduction to the community from Rooster Teeth makes it sound like you’ve never played it before.

ah yes I remember that, the ball afk happened pretty much every game, and then the traitor in about 80%, then spawn killing, 70%, honestly the gamemode is unplayable in reach right now, but on the main topic, honestly I dont get why they removed the spartan abilities from this mode, mostly because that makes it less different then other halo’s, and why have the mode play the same as in the previous iteration (halo 4 because ball throw.) I honestly prefer each game to feel different, because then why get the new one?
Agreed, it’s almost as bad as the new “peace matches” in halo reach. Every time I get into reach it’s a peace match or spawn kill relay where you can’t do anything. This has also happened to me many times in halo 5 where one team spawn kills my whole entire team while one person keeps ball running so they win. It’s absolutely ridiculous, same with breakout it is pretty much nothing of what it used to be with high tension and full of pulse pounding moments. It’s just really disappointing to see something that was perfect turn to crap.

Honestly I host Super Fiesta Grifball Customs every so often, and I took a few precautions:
-
Put team barriers and projectile barriers around the spawn points to prevent spawn killing
-
Disabled Team killing so if you get a Nornfang your teammates can’t screw you over
-
used a Halo Reach styled arena (Large) instead of a Halo 5 styled one (Small)
I have also done vanilla Grifball without teamkilling and then there’s mythic Grifbal, long story short, Team killing adds nothing to Grifball now and should be disabled as I have not yet once encountered anyone who “refuses to score the ball” therefore team killing is absolutely pointless.
