Griefers and how to avoid them ...

Spartan Ops has become a haven for the lowest of all gamers, the common or garden griefer.

The common Griefer (Gamerus simpeltonius)

Griefers tend to congregate in spops matchmaking primarily in vehicle based game maps where they will attempt to frustrate and annoy fellow gamers by destroying other players potential automotive choice thus limiting the potential for kills and increasing the time required to complete a map.

The Car camper (Gamerus boosterus)

The Car camper is a depressingly effective griefer who uses the always devastating combative potential of larger vehicles and to a lesser extent smaller faster weapon platforms to strike at players unaware while under fire forcing respawns over and over again as well as loss of rarer weapons due to unexpected death.

How to deal with Griefers

There are a number of “relatively” effective methods to dissuade griefing

* Ignore them:
yes simply ignore there shenanigans, a troll without bait is no troll at all.

* Use the XBL avoid feature:
The simple ability to choose to avoid griefing players in the future, it may not save your present game but it may stop you encountering that individual in the future.

* Go static:
Simply walking away from the controller, getting yourself a cup of tea or even a beer and watch the carnage. yes it may well be a waste of time and frustrating but its better than fighting against both your own team and the enemy.

* Report all breeches of the code of conduct:
If griefing becomes a verbal conflict then the time has come for advanced measures and use of the XBL alert system must be employed. Next time it may not be you, there are thsose in the community that are unwilling or unable to deal with abuse of a racial or personal nature, a warning via the XBL system is better than a depressed tragedy. People do get hurt by words and not everyone can be immune a spoiled 13 year old with no personnel consequences and there squeaky slurs.

* Quit:
It is acceptable to quit, you play the game to have fun and if you are not having fun then stop playing, quitting IS an option.

once again for those without a sense of irony this is for laughs and giggles at the trolls of gaming and not to be taken too seriously

i seem to have hit a nerve…point made i suppose.

I liked it - good post. I have come across griefers all too often in spops myself.

I just got out of a game on Exile where I got in the tank and got plasma pistol’d 8 times in a row (not an exaggeration) by my “team mates.” During which, I had 2 plasma nades thrown at me by them and was subsequently killed. Most rage inducing crap I’ve ever come across in a halo game.

yea “tank trashing” and “plasma playtime” have become the go-to troll for many griefers simply because it really can screw up your game.

something has to be done.

A good post this, and it’s true. I was in Spartan ops the other day in the ‘Shoot out’ level in Ragnarok, in matchmaking. The mantis’ had just arrived and we all went to the shooting area. I had been doing pretty well up to this point, when all of a sudden, some random guy suddenly starts shooting me.

I got out of the mantis in time sure, but I couldn’t do anything else for the rest of the session. (If I had got in another mantis, he would have just shot me down again.)

P.S. I like the latin-like name you’ve given them. lol

I thought frienly fire was supposed to be off in spartan ops though. Why is it that they are still able to kill us in vehicles?

I liked it. I’ve only ever experienced a griefer or two in this game, but I see where your coming from.

On a side note, I always love it when someone makes up latin names for something.

theyre having fun by making you not have fun. Its rather amusing. I never really get that upset by getting griefed. But still could be irritating in Match Making… Spartan ops? honestly… thats simply fixed by quitting if its that bad. And im not going to lie, i shoot the -Yoink- out of my team mates mantis on shoot out on valhalla if they just sat there and did nothing until you get a mantis… thats DUMB as -Yoink- to sit around and grind exp by AFKing on us

I’ll also agree with this as well. All they do is afk and they still get all the xp at the end? It’s unfair. (Much more annoying in team slayer though).

the report/ avoid system is broken

i’ve “avoided” some guys in some games, only to find them as a teammates the VERY NEXT MATCH

I would agree with this statement. The report/avoid system has always been pretty much useless. I would be very interested in some sort of update/upgrade to the existing system.

> Pretty sure its the USA and UK kids messing up this game, because they suck

its not a case of them sucking so much as that it happens to be a consequence free arena for poor behaviour.

who can stop them doing whatever the hell they want whenever the hell they want? there are no mods, no admin, no parents and the more frustration they can heap on others the better they feel in there little spite filled marshmallow lives.

without a specific report system and without a decent punishment for poor in game behaviour there is nothing to stop them in any way.

forget the voice chat rubbish, forget the sexism and concentrate on the simple fact that it is deemed perfectly acceptable to take time away from other people and make the game as frustratingly difficult as possible for other players…

…find a report system that works and offer up bans and game type limitations to those that choose to ignore basic common courtesy.

but how do we do this?

simple let us record our Spops as well as our matchmaking games and then if a persona violates we have digital evidence that is time stamped and can be used as video or still shots a reason for banning that individual.

its not too hard but due to lack of moderation and customer support this will not be implemented

I really don’t get griefed in SpOps. In MM, sometimes. I find the griefers only start EMP’ing my vehicles if I get in them. Like, I get in the Gauss Hog Turret before they do, they start their shenanigans. SpOps? Yeah, no penalties=Grief Buffet.
