I’ve seen lots of people talking about how annoying the grenade spam is so I wanted to add my piece too. Hopefully 343 recognizes this issue and makes some tweaks based on it.
The core issue, I think, is that with friendly fire turned off, grenades no longer require you to be careful at all. This paired with the lack of any type of grenade danger indicator, means that players can’t tell the difference between an enemy and a friendly grenade if they didn’t happen to see who threw it, and with FF off, that information is now very relevant.
The lack of indicators also worsens the fact that grenades are extremely bouncy, easy to place, and have a massive AoE in this game. I get hit by grenades I felt I was well out of range of a lot, and I’ve seen numerous others say the same. I feel that @343 did not balance the grenades well accounting for the lack of friendly fire in the game.
As such, I think at least two of three things need a tweak:
- In social modes with no friendly fire, players should spawn with only 1 frag grenade instead of 2, to reduce spam
- Grenade danger indicators should be added, marking grenades that are close enough to deal damage, and also distinguishing enemy grenades from friendly ones (the indicators in Halo 4 were great, I thought)
- Grenade AoE radius should be reduced so that you have to throw grenades more skillfully to make good use of them.
I know some players don’t feel this is an issue, but I find it to be very frustrating, and it’s clear much of the community does as well.

I do not feel this as an issue, but I can see your point. I read discussions about it as well. No matter whether you have friendly fire on or off, there will be issues regardless. You turn that on, and you will get people on your team draining your shields and give the enemy team easy kills. I have seen it often enough over the MCC to consider it an utter annoyance. I am just happy I do not have to deal with any of that in Infinite.
Yeah I agree that turning friendly fire back on might cause more problems than solve; that’s why I think they just need to mitigate the problems having it turned off causes, the grenade spam being one of the,n my opinion. I think the game is much, much more fun when everyone only spawn with 1 frag grenade; you have to use it more tactically and you also can’t just use grenades to kill someone by yourself. Playing big party games with my friends, we always set it to only 1 frag and it’s a much more fun experience; it feels much less random.
I also think adding back in the danger indicators would help a lot, because then you can tell both when you’re in range of grenade and when it is an enemy grenade that will actually damage you.

These sound like good ideas honestly. I didn’t realise there wasn’t a grenade damage indicator at all.

Yeah, I really miss the one from 4. I hope they bring it back just like that.
personally i find myself short on grenades a lot… so reducing my grenade count would really hamper my game. i’ve never had an issue with grenades killing me, if they get me I was either being stupid or not aware… i’m most often killed by weapons fire and melee and rarely grenades, maybe you just need to learn how to avoid grenades or endure them as they can’t kill you if your fully shielded.
Though what would be nice is an indicator of where your being damaged even if it’s grenades
I can’t imagine what sort of problems you’d have back in HAlo 1 where you could carry a total of 8 grenades 4 of each.
If you find yourself dieing to grenades I can give you one word of advice, DON"T STOP MOVING!!
Well that’s the thing, the things I did in past games to avoid grenades worked just fine. I understand the game changes, but in this the grenades are far bouncier and have a larger blast radius than ever. It’s not the grenades that I see coming that are problematic, it’s the ones that come through a doorway from halfway across the map when I just finished fighting someone else, that I can neither see nor react to in time to do anything about it.
I do get killed by weapons primarily too, but grenades get me almost every time I win a fight with low remaining health. A combination of the bounciness, high AoE radius, lack of indicators (which I completely agree, btw, they should bring back the ones like they had in 4), plus the fact that there’s no friendly fire so there’s no need to be careful, means often I am killed by grenades that I couldn’t avoid no matter what I do. Even if that’s only 10% of my deaths, that’s still around once a game, which is incredibly frustrating.
But yeah I mean, I’m not stopping moving, but it’s extremely easy to get grenade kills in this game. I do it to other people too, it’s not like I’m saying it’s unfair to me; but those kills aren’t really satisfying cause when I get a grenade kill I’m like “big whoop, that was the grenade’s insane bounce and radius doing the work, not me.” In older games, I at least had to be accurate with my throws.
Ad for the older titles where you had 8 grenades, yeah I mean the spam was annoying then too, but I could see them coming much better and getting killed by them was far rarer because they had a smaller radius and didn’t bounce so much.
I am just talking about frags, by the way; the other grenades are fine imo
they could turn grenade damage to shields up and body damage down, there is already a mechanic like that effecting aim assist

Grenade spam has always been part of halo that said we do need an item to deal with it.
Maybe an anti grenade deploy item that when thrown down will destroy the next 5 (10 in BTB) grenades to fly into its area of influence. like the trophy system in cod. But picked up on a map.
I think that would be cool, but unfortunately I doubt it’d make much difference since equipment is so limited, and the frustrating thing is the constant-ness of the grenades. If players simply had only one grenade, or even had no grenades and there were just more to pick up, they’d be much more fun to use and less annoying. Less area of effect would also make them much less annoying and easy to use.
