But I’m not really comfortable with using the grappling hook to latch onto an enemy, and then yeet yourself towards them.
Yes, it is gameplay, it is not real.
But there’s something extremely off when you latch that spike onto an enemy, who doesn’t flinch, and then get pulled towards them at the speed you do, with them not having any sort of visual reaction or representation.
This is an augmented armored Spartan weighing in at about 500 kg, unless it’s a reduced weight and about 300 kg. Nevertheless, it feels like it makes extremely little sense.
I’d rather see chief pulling enemies towards himself Scorpion style, than making it seem like he weighs a fraction of what enemy he’s pulling himself towards.
This is exactly what was on my mind 5 minutes ago. The grappling is straight up cartoon. This needs to be reworked. A grappling hook pulling an almost 1000 lb spartan towards an enemy and the enemy is statue still in the process, just looked silly.
Pulling enemies toward you, and maybe not even all the way to you, with some slight ragdoll physics would make sense. Or maybe even a tug of war once in a while with bigger enemies and then the grapple fails occasionally.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that feels this is off the mark.

Glad myself I’m not alone.
Pull fusion coils, thumbs up.
Launch yourself to enemy, odd and illogical.
Imagine latching onto a Brute, it staggers, you pull and it comes flying in, then you need to time a melee attack to immediately kill it.
Miss and it can stun you, or pull in a dangerous enemy into close quarters.
Challenging gameplay, with more logical physics than now.
Any kind of grappling hook tech makes no sense logically like in attack on titan and apex legends path finder.
Lets say you jump off a cliff and are planning on grappling on something to a safe landing. What are the chances the hook doesn’t properly latch into the material and you fall to your death? Probably over 75% chance.
Ok well, lets give that a pass and say your grappling hook has a 100% chance of properly latching into any material. While you are swinging, what are the chances the forces cause that material to break and the hook gets unlatched? Probably higher then 50% chance. And to give you a real life example, a professional rock climber Brad Gobright died less then a year ago because those things they tie their rope to broke loose from the rock.
And on top of that, all the stuff you guys mentioned about the weight of mjolnir.
But aside from the bad logic, I don’t mind it to be in campaign.

I can suspend my belief with it enough for map traversal.
It’s probably going to be fine in the campaign.
But the enemy target of the hook acting as a static object to pull yourself to, that’s my line.
Asides for everything wrong with grappling hook. Can we please see Master Chief do something other than bash an enemy with the butt of whatever weapon he has in hand. Seriously Master Chief could probably tear an elites head clean off it’s body with little effort and punt kick halfway across a halo array. I would pay serious money to see that.
I said this is another thread that to me, it just doesnt make sense that he is going to be pulled towards every enemy. I think some enemies should be pulled towards him (grunt, jackal) while others he can be pulled towards. I still don’t think that a brute is going to just leave the hook in, I would prefer to see the brute rip it out and laugh like “really, you thought that was going to work?!?” I dont know, i like it to an extent but in the same regards feel like its trying to chase Apex Legends and we know how 343i loves to chase those trends.
Personally I play on Legendary so using it on enemies would almost certainly spell certain doom for me, so i will probably only be using it to get to places.
Having the grapple pull you towards enemies less than your weight is a little cartoony, but I prefer the consistency in just knowing that I’ll get pulled towards a target all the time, instead of the more ‘realistic’ implementation of sometimes being pulled towards the target, and sometimes pulling the target.
I assume you’re referring to that part in the demo. Maybe it’s momentum based. In the demo he moves forward, jumps, then grapples and gets pulled in to a pretty hefty looking brute. It’s a stretch though. You could also speculate that the thrusters are helping propell him forward… actually, do the gen 3 suits even have thrusters? I know we haven’t seen them in gameplay yet but maybe they’re there. Or even the little stabilize jets they had in H5 as well. I’m wondering if you can only do this with certain enemy types, it would be pretty weird to see it happen with a Grunt or Jackal lol
They did say some of the animations were missing and some sort of animation where maybe Boss targets like Okro 'Vagaduun can rip your grapple out and deny you grappling towards them.
Maybe there is a 20-25% chance that that can happen with normal enemies too(Maybe not Grunts and Jackals, but Elites and Brutes only)
or some enemies can dodge or move out of the way.
IDK about ripping the graple off completely, but nonetheless it will be cool to see.
I dont know what it was, but the grappling hook looked stiff and downright unfun to me. I’d much rather have it function more like this, in the final release: Halo CE Grappling Hook Mod - YouTube

This was actually very nice, You drag elites but they drag you too. But grunts are no problem to drag.
And that sound it makes is pretty cool too.
I don’t like the grappling hook, period. I’d have much rather had a thruster pack along the lines of Halo 4, with way more oomph and a hold-to-super-sprint function. I want to play a SPARTAN, not Spider Man.

My dude this is exactly what the Doom community said to the Meathook.
Look now how they love it

I agree, the meathook is fun in Doom. It’s brutal, gory, and fits right in with the over-the-top chainsaw-to-face drink-the-enemy-blood vibe going on over there. No beef with that at all.
That said, I also like the “Mimic Matter” ability in Prey; but if I see the Chief turn into a water bottle, I’m done dude.
To me it’s all about what fits the aesthetic, y’know? Grappling hook seems so… Out of place on a SPARTAN. Heck, getting the teleportation from HALO: CE would “feel” right, but game mechanics and balance would be a nightmare and a no-go. Gotta fit the lore and theme first and foremost, then the gameplay.
