Grapple-Shot Thoughts

By this point we have all seen the campaign gameplay of the grapple-shot being used effectively against the Banished. Grabbing fusion coils, traversing the map, and generally being one of the coolest additions to halo in some time. However, as I was re-watching the trailer, I began to wonder what other uses this unique bit of equipment could have upon the multiplayer scene. For example, if someone deploys a drop shield, can I grapple it and yank it away from them? Or maybe there’s a vehicle flying or driving by, would I be able to use the grapple to blast off for an attack on titan style boarding action? Also, what happens when I aim it at a player or npc? Will I be able to reenact Mortal Kombat? Personally, I would hope the answers to these questions would be yes. As a skill based pick up, perhaps with three charges, the grapple shot could quickly become a fan favorite. This is just my take on it though, what do you think it should be able to do?

I think it’ s going to be (more or less) like titanfall 2 grapple hook, But i don’ t think we will be able to pick up someone else’ s power up.

I think the grapple shot is epic. Imagine if a banshee is flying near you and you’re able to grapple and hijack it, and I think the idea of yanking someone’s drop shield is awesome as well.

The flipside to the drop shield could be that you instead pull yourself through it, negating it’s one-sided effectiveness.

That would make more sense than taking it, and it could also favor close range weapons.

I can see the grapple shot being used mostly in multiplayer as a way to get around more quickly/being able to get yourself to certain positions on the map much easier. I hope they don’t make maps with areas that you can only reach by the grapple shot. That might make things a bit unbalanced. Being able to grapple yourself towards or onto enemy players could work out, as that basically puts you in melee range yourself. It will be interesting to see if they make it a single use or whether it will have multiple uses per pickup.

Yeah, it seems you can’t fire without releasing the grapple shot, which is a fair balancing mechanic making grappling in on a player risky, but potentially rewarding with a Shotgun or Sword in hand.

I’m not sure if it has infinite uses. If it does, then I see them as The Russells (Gravity gloves) that make grabbing things from a distance easier but can also help you get up places.

It looks far more rudimentary and simple than that. The trajectory and distance you could get with that grappling hook dwarfs what we’ve seen so far of Infinite. This looks to play mechanically much closer to Zelda Ocarina of Time’s hookshot than Titanfall 2. As fun as the Titanfall 2 grappling hook is, or as fun as it is in Apex, a grappling hook that mechanically flexible basically eliminates everything else about traversal in Halo, even the faster two, Halo 4 & 5. If the game moves at legacy speeds grappling hook eliminates all that positioning strategy and skill of the older games.

For campaign, I want to be able to designate where I want to go with it, then decide when to go. It would be a two-step process. Designate, wait, then go. Like say I was fighting, but prior to engaging the enemy, I set it to a location behind or near cover; then when my shields get low, I can zip back out of range.
For multiplayer, I don’t think that would be a good feature though.

The Grapple hook in Titanfall was so much fun! It looks like Infinite’s grapple shot basically shoots you in a straight line directly to whatever you are attached to. Allowing you to swing around and build up crazy momentum doesn’t seem like Halo, and just seems like a great way to break map design lol

That would be a very cool concept for campaign. Unfortunately it looks like you have to zip line the instant you fire the grapple hook, but maybe it’s something they can implement. They have said they want equipment to function broadly the same across different game modes, so I don’t know if they will make the grapple hook have that different of a functionality.

Agreed. That’s why it seems more like Zelda’s hookshot than anything or Widowmaker’s grapple in Overwatch. A very simple, direct tool. I feel like that’s the right call for this game because anything else would overtake the rest of the gameplay and mechanics. Skill curve too for that matter.

For multiplayer it is a pick up item

I hope they do. Because realistically, a Spartan would be able to do it without looking, if you think about it. So this would fill that “Spartan reflexes” place. But I don’t know if that would make it too overpowered. Here’s hoping.

I bet you could be able to grapple onto somebody’s car and then hijack it. they could obviously shoot you off but if they are too late the vehicle is yours. another idea would be if you could grapple somebody out of the vehicle and then take it for yourself

I hope there won’t be only grapple but also jet pack and thruster pack, maybe also some game selection without all of that.
