Goods and bads about halo 2

Halo 2 has a great epic campaign, but the multiplayer is boring and weighted incredibly in favor of whoever has the least of a life.

I actually didn’t like h2’s campaign. I felt after the books that had been produced and CE all pumping the covenant as this superior force, the covenant just felt week. One frigate managed to bamboozle an assault carrier long after it cleared the debris field even though the ship should have easily been able to swat it from the sky. Seeing the covenant tear itself apart in its hour of victory has forever hurt any credibility i give them.

Likewise, chief seemed to get a power boost, doing crazy stunts like returning a bomb, and effectively completing operation Red Flag all on his own. Dual-wielding I felt pushed him away from super soldier into ‘super hero’ territory.

Not a single “good guy” died, which is odd considering how much the game was pumped as being this big battle for earth originally. Big battle for earth didn’t really happen either.

Not a fan of almost half the levels in the game. Doesn’t help that from a plot point of view, half the missions are “get to the next level using the exact same tileset that continues the story”. There’s a number of levels you could watch the opening cinematic then jump to then ext level because nothing of value really occurs.

Whoever thought verticle split co-op was a good idea needs to be shot by the legendary sniper jackles. Iron skull being on in legendary co-op was also a terible idea.

Brutes were annoying bullet spunges.

I found it odd that chief’s levels all tended to be well lit (except his last 2 flood ones), and the arbiter’s tended to be all dark and moody (except his last two). Chief’s flashlight is only useful for 2 levels and the tutorial about how to use it.

Chief’s story felt plot-twist-less, though arbiter’s are satisfying. Every mission is effectively chasing prophets for chief.

The graphics looked blurry and the texture pop was annoying. I much prefered CE’s graphics, despite being not as advanced.

I also don’t like regenerating hit points other than shields. h2 is the only game i’ve been frustrated by people running away.

For some reason I always felt ammo-starved in this game like I have no other title.

I guess I’ll write about the problems with the lore since I did so for the other thread about Halo: CE. The best about Halo 2’s campaign is that it feels faster, more action-packed and deeper than Halo: CE’s campaign. It visits more locations and explores more perspectives. There’s also a lot of neat twists and turns along the way. As the Covenant’s perspective was explored through the Arbiter and the Flood was established to be an intelligent species through the Gravemind, Halo 2 expands the lore of the Halo universe more so than any other game. I really appreciate the Arbiter’s development as a disgraced commander seeking atonement for his crimes, as well as the relationship between Chief and Cortana and Chief is forced to leave her behind this time.

Now, the problems with Halo 2’s campaign and story can be attributed to its over-ambitiousness, some bad direction decisions made and the restraints placed upon Bungie. While Halo 2 massively expands the universe, it does so in a flawed way. Characters like the Gravemind and Arbiter were not introduced well, and a lot of players felt there was an over-emphasis on them, as Halo 2 had been heavily marketed as a battle on Earth. In some ways, it’s understandable how they feel these elements detract from that experience and the transition between the Chief’s and Arbiter’s level were hardly seamless. Additionally, as much Halo 2 expanded the Covenant and Elites, much of the covenant species – such as the Brutes – felt one dimensional. It would have improved the narrative if only some members of the Covenant were warring each other by the end, not entire species. And then there’s that god awful cliffhanger ending…

The community. They want every game to be halo 2.

I think the arbiters story in halo 2 is probably the strongest narrative in the games for me ( can’t speak too the expanded universe). He goes through the most growth. With good supporting characters like rtas and tartarus. Though I do think it was lacking in a really good driving sequence like ce and 3 had. Not that what we got was bad but just not as good.

As much as i just posted about why I didn’t like h2, I did like the arbiter’s story a lot. I think it’s narrative also shines because we have a character that can say more than 1-liners and isn’t just a military pawn (unlike Chief, no offense). His levels also tended to be the more wonderous and interesting in my opinion. Chief liked the colour brown it seems.
