People keep saying how Halo is becoming like CoD and that’s a bad thing. And in some respects, it is. In others, it isn’t.
One of the main reasons I like both Halo 3 and Black Ops is that they are both so different. If I want to get tons of kills in a short period of time and pilot helicopters as I rain down bullets on kids, I’ll play Black Ops. If I want to work hard as part of a team with friends to rank up to challenge myself, I’ll play Halo 3.
But I never play Reach. Why? Well, why should I? The hard work with friends to rank up is gone. What reason do I have to play Reach? I can’t get tons of kills quickly like in Black Ops, and I can’t work hard toward a skill-based rank as part of a team to rank up. And it’s not fun like Halo 3. Halo 3 was funny. Funny stuff happened and it was made funnier by the funny looking elites, spartans, and the funny death screams and fails people do.
Bungie copied CoD with the ranking system in Reach. And that was a bad change.
Some good CoD-like changes:
-
Weapon skins. Seriously, I don’t see any reason why these are bad. They don’t affect gameplay and they don’t affect what makes Halo, Halo.
-
Unlockables? SOME. Only the ones that affect your appearance, NOT GAMEPLAY. Unlockable BR, stupid idea. Seriously, WTF. Unlockable armor, great idea.
So before we start saying dumb stuff like “You people cannot accept change” or “Halo is becoming just like CoD,” why don’t we think about it in terms of “good change” and “bad change?”
Change is not inherently good, as we’ve seen through our lives time and again. CoD is not all bad, just the stuff that dramatically alters what makes Halo, Halo.
Good change and bad change is just based off of person preference. What may be bad change to another may be good or tolerable change to someone else.
I’m almost getting tired of reading all these “halo is becoming cod” posts
Can you judge a game on how it plays before it even comes out?

This isn’t a “Halo is becoming CoD” post. With that said, Halo is becoming CoD. But that isn’t all necessarily bad. Some things Halo is copying from CoD are good for Halo, and others are not. The point of my post is to say we need to push back on the bad changes like the Reach ranking system.

they are getting rid of reach ranking system and putting in a whole new one
im also saying that maybe the “unlocking” a weapon is not the same as we think in CoD
i say we wait it out and feed them the money for per-ordering the LE
If unlockables are tied in to current rank (I assume h4 will have something) then we have no issues. Rank up, unlock a new bonus and go one to fight other people with access to the same bonus. Lose rank and you lose access to this bonus.

Oh yeah, I know they are getting rid of the Reach ranking system. Thank God. I think the community played a big role in making sure of that. Had no one complained, they may have put the same thing in, or similar. I’m still waiting to hear what the new ranking system is. If it isn’t a skill-based ranking system where the rank is shown on the nameplate in the lobby, I’m not buying it.

Perhaps an issue with causality here. If players hadn’t complained it would have been because reaches system was good.
In my opinion i dont think perks and unlockables is what makes call of duty popular. The game is popular because it takes very little time to master. A casual gamer can go into the game occasionally and do well because all it takes to kill someone is like 2 shots so you get enjoyment faster out of it. But with halo someone who just picks up the game won’t immediately be getting kills he needs to work on his skills before he can be successful and get something out of the experience. Again this is just my opinion

This, 100%. CoD is a game casual gamers immediately understand.
“Okay, cool, I’m a soldier fighting in an army and I just have to point, aim, and shoot. I always wondered what this was like.”
To like Halo, you have to be interested in it. You have to wonder what it’s all about. You have to understand the context of everything.

What I’m saying is that if we hated it but kept quiet because we “trusted” 343, we may have gotten it again. As consumers in a marketplace, it’s our job to make it clear what the developer needs to do to earn our money.

Halo fans keep quiet? Such a bizarre concept.

Many on this board have demanded just that. In fact, there are threads up on the top 2 pages of this forum asking us to relax and trust 343, wait until the game is out to complain about it.

no matter how the winds howls, the mountain cannot bow to it.
