Good Capture Cards

I’m looking into getting into gaming reviews, commentary things like that, the issue is I don’t yet own a Capture Card, I figured the halo community especially with its love for montages <3 would know of some of the highest quality ones.

Suggestions?

Ask Google,it know’s everything

I own two, both for a specific use and both are very high quality.

The Black Magic Pro Intensity card: It’s around $200 and great for live streaming. As a live broadcaster myself on twitch.tv it really is the only choice when it comes to supreme quality for live streaming. There really is no other option if you want the highest quality. While this card does capture stuff it requires a powerful pc and a lot of free HDD space sicne the card captures mostly in lossness (uncompressed which is huge fles). So unless you plan to live stream it might not be the best choice for you

The HD PVR: In my opinion this is great for capturing high quality gameplay that you want to store and save or upload later onto youtube. It automatically captures gameplay at a compressed rate but not so much it degrades quality at all. This card is an external usb 2.0 card that runs about $200 and won’t bog your pc / laptop down since it does most of the processing power on it’s own.

Sounds too good t be true? I have captured well over 2,000+ gameplay matches with the HD PVR (approx 5 TB of data so far) and uploaded thousands to my youtube channel as proof. From the sound of it the HD PVR will be your best bet since you asked for high quality cards. The Intensity Pro is excellent for live streaming but HD PVR if all you want to do is capture gameplay and not stream it.

My vote goes for this.

Hauppauge makes a capture card designed specifically for gaming! It’ll run you about $200 USD, though, so it’s a bit on the pricey side…

Linky!

I agree on the BlackMagic Intensity Pro. It’s what I use.

Here’s one of my videos as an example showing you over 23 minutes of Campaign footage. I think after seeing it in action you’ll fall in love. This video is even compressed a bit, but it still looks great.

The downside is it needs a powerful computer and lots of hard drive space as mentioned before. But if you can swing it, I highly recommend it!

It’s all about your current setup, and what quality you are looking for.

If you use HDMI, there are a couple options available to you. The popular choice has been the Black Magic Intensity Pro. However, a new option has recently come out in the form of the Avermedia Live Gamer HD. Both use HDMI inputs, and have HDMI outputs so you wont have to buy an HDMI splitter (unless you want to). The one from Avermedia has dedicated audio inputs so that’s a plus. The Black Magic card has a dedicated DVI port while the Avermedia one uses an HDMI to DVI adapter, so that’s kinda nice for the Black Magic one. The Avermedia card also has a button that connects to your computer that you can push and immediately start streaming live, which is nice, but useless if you use Xsplit to stream.

If you use VGA cables, you may want to look into the Avermedia Game Broadcaster HD. That is what I currently use. It’s plus side is that it is the only Capture Card that takes VGA inputs, thus allowing you to capture at 1920x1080 resolution. The downside is that it uses your computer’s mic input as it’s audio input. Not a big deal, just kinda annoying.

If you use Component cables (green, red, blue) or Composite cables (yellow, red, white), then you may want to look into the Avermedia Game Capture HD. While it cannot capture up to 1080p (limitation with those cables), it is still a solid choice.

The choice is up to you. However, people’s example videos can only show you so much. A lot of what you see from people also includes how the video was rendered, and what settings they used. For example, I can use a top-of-the-line HD capture card, but if I don’t render the video correctly and in HD settings in whatever video editing software I choose (I recommend Sony Vegas Pro), then no matter what quality I record at, I can render the quality differently, and thus have a rough looking video.

JUST DONT BUY A DAZZLE YOU WILL REGRET IT

I use HDMI cables, I’m mostly looking for capturing video at first, streaming will come later, but I don’t intend on doing it a lot i’m mostly a casual player, and Im not capable of the serious amazing feats, so I’m turning my talents to reporting, and reviewing, which are some things im good at.

I have a fantastic PC, so No worries there either.

Dust off this thread…

Right, I’m after something for just capping gameplay video and audio for youtube, as well as live streaming. Is there anything that does both for a decent price, and is named black magic?

I have a Black Magic Intensity Pro for a few years now, it hasn’t degraded at all, and has HDMI and component 1080p recording, super fast and recommended.

Is that supposed to be “isn’t named” or did you dust this thread off to answer your own question? I’m confused! Haha.

So, to everyone again, a newbie on the streaming/capping scene (for 360 and PC games). I want something for both capping AND streaming.
