Going through series, what's most important?

Wasn’t quite sure where to post this considering it could fit under multiple boards here, but anyway… I’m currently working on going through the entire Halo series. I’ve been playing Halo for quite a long time now, but I’ve never actually sat down and went through EVERYTHING. Previously I had only finished Halo 1-3, ODST, and Reach, but now I’m diving into the books and movies as well. So my question is, what should I look into first/what is the most important parts of the series? Basically I’m wanting to play Halo 4 since I’ve never played it before, but I don’t want to jump into it until I’m fully ready. As for where I currently stand, this is what I’ve gone through in the past two weeks.

  • Beat Halo 1
  • Beat Halo 2
  • Beat Halo 3
  • Beat Halo 3: ODST
  • Bought Fall of Reach and have read the first 120 pages (so still under half way done, but I got to the point where they got their armor).
  • Watched half of the episodes in Halo Legends and plan on finishing the other half tonight.

So, I already know that I should finish Fall of Reach before going back to replay Reach, but other than that what should I focus on, and when would be a good time to start 4?

Thanks

Go ahead and play 4. If you want the full story you should play reach at some point but as it occurs before ce it shouldn’t effect your play through. Allegedly there are novels that give more info about the villain in h4 but I don’t consider them necessary.

Darn two post limit, but hmmm ok. I do plan on replaying Reach once I finish the first novel, but I’m not sure when I’ll reach that point. I also found a copy of halo wars (which I’ve never played) that I figured I’d play the moment it works on Xbo… Although I assume it’s best to wait till after the first novel for that as well?

anyway, guess I could start 4 and just go back to older parts of the story as I find the time to. On another note though, I did watch all of Legends and forward unto dawn over the weekend and loved both!

There are a lot of books in the universe. Some good, some alright. If you enjoy the universe, you’ll probably find some enjoyment out of every book. I’ve only read a couple, but I’ll get around to them eventually (hopefully). I believe there is a list on wikipedia of all of the books and comics.

I’d reccomend the forerunner trilogy and kilo 5 trilogy before playing halo 4, they clear up a lot about it, but kind of ruin the surprises. First Strike is also a great read, explains chief’s adventure between halo ce and halo 2. Reach was my favourite halo, and wars is my favourite rts, but halo 4 was the one I disliked the most. Ghosts of Onyx is another of my favourites, but you should read it before the kilo 5 trilogy.
That’s my advice anyway.

Also, if you like Sgt Johnson, Contact Harvest is a good read, and if you want to learn more about Jacob Keyes, then Cole Protocol also introduces you to Spartan Grey team.

So would it be best to read the books in release order then? Also if I recall wasn’t there a book about Buck? Does that clear up odst any?

Reading the books on release order isn’t a bad idea, but you’ll be jumping all around the timeline. The one about Buck is New Blood I think, but haven’t read it yet.

Oh ok. Well if they jump around and fill in the gaps I don’t really mind. I mean fall of reach is the first and it’s already jumping around quite a bit. The other things I’ve seen have already filled me in on some of these gaps, but I’m assuming there is a lot more I don’t know about.

Speaking of which, I did start halo 4 like you guys said, but there is something I’m already confused about at the start… When they release the guy, why did they already have a name for him, and why were they not that shocked to see him? I thought they believed the ancient race was 100% dead?
