Thanks to Halo Retribution, pg333, we have a depth for how deeply Meridian was glassed (at least at this location). 20cm. But realistically, the amount of heat required to melt that much ground as quickly as the Covenant glass planets (if Jericho 7 is any example) would have vaporized some depth before the bleed-through heat melted the ground creating the glass we see.
I found this interesting. If anyone else has any page references/quotations that may contribute to canonically-defensible calculations for Covenant ships’ weapon output, please share them.
It could be possible that the heat emitted by the lance is enough to glass the ground, even if the area isnt hit directly by the beam,so assuming the area in Retribution wasnt hit directly,20 cm seems to be realistic.
Glassing weapons are stated to have the energy output of several nuclear weapons per second.

They produce a fireball powerful enough to completely incinerate most everything in their path (as we saw in The Return’s animated version with that poor Marine). The heat spreads and rolls out. It makes sense that the ground would be glassed even if its not directly being effected simply through sheer heat dispersal.

Or like in Halo Wars 2 those brutes were just annihilated around the cleansing beam when it hit to the ground.

Incinerate and annihilate are basicly the same when we talk about glassing.Everything gets brocken down to its molecules or atoms.
Edit:Everything organic is meant here.

In Mortal Dictata, the KigYar pirate captain says that when the CCS Battlecruiser fires its cleansing beam, nothing on the ground lives long enough to even feel pain unless they’re several kilometers away. I take this to mean that a momentary firing of the Cleansing Beam at full power (as seen in said test firing in Mortal Dictata) creates a terrain-erasing molten puddle at least 4-6 kilometers across. With this in mind, I have no difficulty believing that they can glass entire planets in relatively short time when they’re only going 20cm deep.

I don’t think anyone claimed otherwise.

Inorganic too; stone and metal melt and fuse into the glass.
