Give Osiris a chance

Edit: For those wondering, yes I do feel that Osiris took up far too much gameplay in the campaign, and I too was annoyed with Reeds’ direction of the game. I know that 343 are trying to pass the torch from Blue Team to Osiris, but it was very rushed. I’m strictly talking about Osiris as people, not how long you play as them.

Hold up a minute before you slam me with the " OH MA LAWDDD BUT LOCKE WAS SO LIFELESS AND BORING!" and the “But dood, they had no character progression, so besides Buck they like tooootally suck man.” Let me explain first.

Remember playing Halo Combat Evolved for the first time? Jogging around on this ship being torn apart? Because I recall while doing so, I was playing as a character who I didn’t even know had the capability of speaking for a while. There was no “What time/year is it?” Or “what’s happening marine?” Just a tall metal man wondering around until he found his blue boo to explain the situation.

The Master Chief: the best character in the Halo franchise simply because his story has been elaborated unlike most other characters in Halo.
I’m not trying to say I don’t like the Chief. In fact I love the guy. It’s just that most of these “Halo veterans” are too stuck on the idea of him being the only bad-behind character because they grew up with him. In the first Halo, John had almost no character progression whatsoever. In fact, in my personal opinion, he was lifeless until Halo 4. I’d usually just pretend it was me behind that armor because I was given barely any reminders that there’s anybody in the armor at all.

But then we have Osiris, but specifically Spartan Locke. This is what I’ve gathered from Locke in Halo 5. He’s a cutting edge soldier who is unhindered by those little red dots on his tracker no matter how many there are, because he knows damn well that he’ll take out his targets without question, just because it was in the mission briefing. Or that he cares for his team, and wouldn’t let anything happen to them. His goal is to simply complete his missions no matter how reckless or insane they might sound, simply because “he has a job to do.”

Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Just like Chief, Locke is for the most part, a silent soldier who carries out his missions with swift brutality and worries about nothing but his team. Locke is basically the Chief without nearly as much experience.

So the point of this arguably annoying rant was just to ask all of the Osiris nay sayers to give them time. Chief grew as a character in the span of MANY games. So why do we expect Locke to become a fully fleshed character within one game? I have faith that within time, all of Osiris will grow as characters. Just try to be patient.

But this is all just my opinion. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Osiris is okay in my books, but the fact that they had 80% of the campaign was a huge let down. What were they thinking!

No, they should all die except for Buck. I don’t want anything of Reed’s legacy mentioned in Halo 6.

I’m not an Osiris nay sayer, but I did want to see more of chief in the campaign. And no I don’t find any Osiris spartans boring. They’re all pretty cool but it seemed like the campaign was all about them. Shouldn’t have been

Because that’s what competent writers are supposed to do. Plenty of chances and time to do so in 5 and Reed utterly failed.

I feel like if they wanted to give Osiris the Spotlight it should have been a game like ODST. The main Halo games should be about chief.

My problem isn’t that Osiris was bad, but they didn’t share much of the spotlight with the original. I don’t hate Osiris, I hate the lack of Blue Team.

I agree man.

Well said.

I feel the exact same.

By that logic, not a single writer was competent in your eyes than. Chief had zero progression unil Halo 4.

Well said man. I do wish Chief had more time in the game.

So you don’t like them simply because of Reed? Care to elaborate? I don’t like Reed either but video game characters aren’t the ones to blame.

He crafted the worst Halo campaign I’ve ever played, and that’s second only to how I disliked Reach’s campaign. I didn’t know anything about Osiris’ team’s other members and I have zero Fs about them except for Buck (and only knew Locke through Nightfall and I didn’t care much about him either). Blue Team I didn’t know jack about because I know they’re from the books but casual players like me should have gotten some more background info on each one. Blue Team had zero personality and were just a bunch of doorknobs following Chief around.

Hell I take back what I said about Reach’s campaign. At least Noble Team were a little more useful and had more personality.

I see your point. I’m sorry that Reed ruined your enjoyment for the game. Just don’t let bad story telling tarnish what Osiris can be to you in the future.

He seriously did ruin it for me, so I’m fiercely hoping they have a different writer for Halo 6 this time around. What irks me was 343 was great at background story telling in their previous endeavors in Anniversary CE and Halo 2 and 4 with all the terminals. The data pads could’ve given background info on Blue Team and Osiris Team to educate everyone else who did not read the books.

I think if they want to keep osirus than they can keep a separate game for them. Blue team needs to be the heros in the upcoming halo for the campaign to be of any worth

halo should be all about master chief or half and half like halo 2 with arbiter! I hope halo 6 has more about master chief in it! 343 could have a spin off series with other characters like Bungie did with ODST and Reach and that would be epic! 343 please make a FPS game with Sarah Palmer as the main character!!! there is a idea! I liked Locke and Osiris a lot I just wanted a half and half game with them and Master chief!

I really got to know the Osiris characters, while I was hunting for skulls, and mission intel. I liked them, they layed the framework for additional character development. At the same time Halo is about Master Chief, not anyone else, and certainly should not be about Cortana or Locke. Unfortunately Osiris is taking the blame for a poor marketing job by 343.

I agree that the Chief developed a great deal over time, however, as a developed franchise, introducing Locke in the manner 343 did isn’t ok.

Locke didn’t just appear in Halo 5 out of nowhere. He was introduced in H2A cutscenes, appeared in his own movie (Nightfall) and Halo 5 as his first game. Despite this, he still manages to have zero character. Let’s compare to another new addition.

Tanaka:

Prior to H5, Tanaka appears in one, and only one place. A very short story arc in the Halo comic books. In that scant few pages, she exhibits more characterization, more growth, and more development than Locke had in three separate and quite large products.

FYI, that characterization occurs through being one of the only humans to ever survive a planet glassing. Tanaka is one hell of a -Yoink!-.
