Edit: For those wondering, yes I do feel that Osiris took up far too much gameplay in the campaign, and I too was annoyed with Reeds’ direction of the game. I know that 343 are trying to pass the torch from Blue Team to Osiris, but it was very rushed. I’m strictly talking about Osiris as people, not how long you play as them.
Hold up a minute before you slam me with the " OH MA LAWDDD BUT LOCKE WAS SO LIFELESS AND BORING!" and the “But dood, they had no character progression, so besides Buck they like tooootally suck man.” Let me explain first.
Remember playing Halo Combat Evolved for the first time? Jogging around on this ship being torn apart? Because I recall while doing so, I was playing as a character who I didn’t even know had the capability of speaking for a while. There was no “What time/year is it?” Or “what’s happening marine?” Just a tall metal man wondering around until he found his blue boo to explain the situation.
The Master Chief: the best character in the Halo franchise simply because his story has been elaborated unlike most other characters in Halo.
I’m not trying to say I don’t like the Chief. In fact I love the guy. It’s just that most of these “Halo veterans” are too stuck on the idea of him being the only bad-behind character because they grew up with him. In the first Halo, John had almost no character progression whatsoever. In fact, in my personal opinion, he was lifeless until Halo 4. I’d usually just pretend it was me behind that armor because I was given barely any reminders that there’s anybody in the armor at all.
But then we have Osiris, but specifically Spartan Locke. This is what I’ve gathered from Locke in Halo 5. He’s a cutting edge soldier who is unhindered by those little red dots on his tracker no matter how many there are, because he knows damn well that he’ll take out his targets without question, just because it was in the mission briefing. Or that he cares for his team, and wouldn’t let anything happen to them. His goal is to simply complete his missions no matter how reckless or insane they might sound, simply because “he has a job to do.”
Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Just like Chief, Locke is for the most part, a silent soldier who carries out his missions with swift brutality and worries about nothing but his team. Locke is basically the Chief without nearly as much experience.
So the point of this arguably annoying rant was just to ask all of the Osiris nay sayers to give them time. Chief grew as a character in the span of MANY games. So why do we expect Locke to become a fully fleshed character within one game? I have faith that within time, all of Osiris will grow as characters. Just try to be patient.
But this is all just my opinion. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
