At this point, the benefits of sprinting feel negligible. My first thought was to remove sprint, give dedicated options for sliding, and increase base movement speed slightly. however, I realized that doesn’t fix the issue for players who want sprint.
Instead I think it would be nice to give players an option in the settings adding an option for sliding without sprint by both giving it it’s own button to map and having it activate when moving forward and pressing crouch.
(Maybe allow the slide to halt part way when the forward key is released to prevent players from accidently sliding out of cover and stuff)
If sliding gets it’s own button, then I would be able to use the Shift key or an extra button on a controller for something else.
though not sure if I’m the only one that thinks this sounds nice.
I agree just remove Sprint increase default movement speed and remove sliding
im fine with it as is. If you want to slide, you have to lower your gun. Bc then you could just slide during a gunfight whenever.
343i has decided to make sprint not about moving much faster but more or less an extension so you have access sliding. Which I think is a nice balance. I didn’t know I would like slow sprinting so much. I think it’s a nice compromise
I do agree with Creepy Clown, yes the sprint is almost pointless so far, but the overall movement mechanics feels really good. But sliding without sprint would affect the balance more then anything and make the sprint ever more useless, sprint feels more like a momentum builder in this game as far as I saw/played

good point, I didn’t think of that.
still wish I didn’t have to map sprint to a key, but I guess there is no easy fix for it.
Slide without sprint is like thruster pack from Halo 5, but crouch (not that I wouldn’t like)
To be clear, maybe, sliding would only be possible while moving forward.
Would that still mess with balancing too much? there honestly isn’t any gun downtime when exiting sprint or entering a slide anyways. and the moment of downtime when entering a slide would still be present without sprinting.

With most of the weapons, you can fire out of sprint without a delay to raise your weapon anyway. So you can slide during combat just fine in Infinite. This would just allow you to pick the direction of a slide without looking at it, and remove an otherwise negligible Sprint from the game. I agree whole heartedly with the OP, as honestly clicking LS if I want to cross the map a little bit faster is just tedious at this point and I’d rather be able to bind something else that’s useful there like Ping or swap nades.

Yes, but when you fire your gun you no longer have access to slide. If we got rid of sprint and just slid instead, that would raise more issues during actual gunplay. Whereas currently, you can slide into a combat encounter and shoot, but you can’t keep sliding during the encounter bc you can’t sprint bc you are shooting.
I hope my logic is making sense, I feel like it’s a little hard to explain with text. I think ditching sprint and keeping slide would be an issue. It should be all or nothing

You also don’t have to “wind up” your sprint to be capable of sliding. You can instantly slide in Infinite by pressing the Sprint and holding Crouch simultaneously, so it doesn’t make a difference there either. The only difference would be the ability to slide in whatever direction you are moving, though they could just make it so it only works when moving forwards I kind of feel like it would be better to free the slide so you can do sick backwards slides or strafing side slides during gunplay.

I think that’s where we differ, because the thought of sliding 24/7 halo gunplay sounds really bad to me

They could just have no slide, and bring back classic Halo style spring boarding. The only argument I see from high level play for slide is the sliding tricks you can do to bounce of slopes and pick up speed, all of which you could do with just crouching and jumping in Halo 3.
I like how sprint is handled in this game. Alone it feels not super useful, but you can use it to set up movement combos which I think is a nice evolution of the classic gameplay and a good compromise between the sprint vs no sprint crowds. The only thing that can hold the concept back is the map designs. I did not get as much time as I would have liked to test out all the maps extensively, but at least on recharge, there seemed to be a good number of jumps where sprint was required to make a gap or get on a ledge without having to clamber. The only thing I might change is bumping the sprint speed up ever so slightly so there is a little more distinction between walking and running.
