DISCLAIMER: If you are just going to reply with “adapt” or “you’re stuck in the past,” should we have just adapted to armor lock or bloom? Is CS:GO stuck in the past because it doesn’t have sprint? Is it slow? I’m sure tons of these people would disagree. So getting that out of the way, sprint doesn’t make a game any faster, nor is it a required feature in an FPS.
BMS= Base movement speed
So far, I have seen only one reason why people think sprint is good besides opinion, which is immersion.
Everyone says that Spartans should be able to run, but then I can add to that saying Spartans should also be able to run and shoot at the same time, or go prone, so that argument is completely pointless.
It isn’t an opinion that sprint makes maps large. That is a fact. Truth to midship/heretic for example.
Again, I’m sure I’ll get tons of responses saying you don’t have to sprint. That’s true, but then you wouldn’t be able to traverse the map at a reasonable speed, instead, you would be going at H5’s slow BMS. If you choose not to go at the pace of a turtle, you have to put your gun down, which shouldn’t happen since this is an FPS, you shouldn’t have to put your gun down to move fast.
Sprint can and should be replaced be a faster BMS. It also wouldn’t include the negative effects that sprint has, like being able to run away from fights and sprinting back to where you just died, or spaced out maps.
I’ve never seen any real defense for sprint and I’d love to hear them, so please, let’s have an actual discussion, besides the old “git gud” or “adapt.”
The real problem with sprint is that the maps just aren’t big enough so the action is a bit too fast-paced which is the case with 5 in particular due to maps being cqc fair fight “Shoeboxes”. and who doesn’t like the idea of sprinting out danger if it means that you can stay alive, by keeping sprint we ensure that ttk is decreased, and as I said before the maps just don’t facilitate that response with 5. you want to be fast paced with BMS and have a run and gun strategy just go back to CE. The future is now.
I’m so sick of these threads, who cares either way? I play halo 5 and have fun, I play h3 and have fun. Sprint sucked in h4, it’s well balanced in h5.
Here’s what it adds, the ability to move around the map at high speed WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SHOOT and it’s that extra layer that ads to the overall metagame should I Sprint in order to beat my opponent to an advantageous position giving me the upper hand or will I get caught with my pants down not being able to return fire when I Sprint into a hail of gunfire. Honestly it does add an extra layer to gameplay, but honestly I have fun in the old halos as well. Although I must add that I was playing h3 last night and while it is fun it also feels dated, you can definitely feel the games age.
In conclusion Sprint brings an extra layer to the game and personally I like it, but if they removed it from h6 you would not see me in the forums asking everyone to crucify 343i like all of you anti Sprint guys are doing.
Doom doesn’t have sprint and you are just as fast as someone sprinting so people can I would be deeply appreciative if you would refrain from speaking. about no sprint being too slow.
You’re not the defining authority on the term “legitimate.”
What I think is legitimate you may see as trite; it’s subjective. So I’ll counter your challenge with one of my own: you give us a “legitimate” reason why sprint is bad.
“Halo doesn’t need sprint!” So? It doesn’t hurt the gameplay either. - “Halo was fine in the past when it didn’t have sprint.” So? Many would argue that H5’s multiplayer is the best yet. - “People can run from fights too easily!” So? Kill them better. I suck, and I’ve NEVER had an encounter where someone I was going to kill managed to escape me by simply turning and sprinting away. - “Immersion isn’t a valid argument because prone.” So? SOME immersion is better than none. - edit: “Maps are too big now!” So? Traverse them faster and more tactically with sprint. Anyway, this argument will go on forever. Sprint is here to stay; I’m willing to bet the majority of players prefer it. The vocal minority crying for it to be taken out have made their point, and yet 343 seems to have made very clear that it’s staying put. As much as you may hate this: adapt or leave, because sprint won’t.
As I do think removing Sprint wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing, there are reasons to keep it in the game.
Smaller maps can be an issue. Camping does not happen NEAR as much as it does in the past Halos. You don’t see people staying on their spawn with a BR and having a standoff.
Evading. Having the chance to evade without shield regen is an awesome addition in my opinion. It’s an additional option given to players. Rather than sprinting away being the best choice, now it’s not always the case.
Those are the main reasons I see to it not being a bad addition. I can see the game doing fine without it, but I am a LONG time Halo fan, since the beginning. I’ve been to a Halo 2 midnight release because of my love for CE, and I’ve played every Halo since. H3 was my favorite MM Halo, but Halo 5 is my 2nd. I honestly love everything about the MM in this game. Halo 4 was my least favorite, MCC was a disappointment, and although I liked Reach, it wasn’t great. This game feels like Halo.
Equal starts is what it’s about, to me. Sprint encourages less camping, and that’s a big deal to me.
I was not a fan of amour abilities in previous Halo’s or even Halo having Sprint.
However I’ve come to realise that we cannot be stuck in the same mindset and have Halo remain how it was in Halo 2 or Halo 3, those days are gone.
While sprint allows other players to get away from fights your shields do not recharge when doing so but sprint also allows you to get into the fight faster from respawn as well. So while it can let players escape it also allows other players on your team to sprint to areas to flank them before they get a chance for their shields to recharge.
If Sprint was going to disappear it would of happened by now, we’re three Halo’s in from when it first appeared in Halo Reach and in my opinion Halo 5 has by far the best mechanics surrounding it.
The maps not accommodating Sprint (specifically some of the forge maps) is a different argument all together though.

Halo CE plays faster than H5. This ‘you need sprint because older Halo were slow’ is a myth. The only Halo that was ‘slow’ was H3. You don’t need sprint, just up the base speed movement or make you move quicker when you have a pistol out.

These weren’t written by me, but they sum it up.
Sprint influences map design by pushing developers to make larger maps, which is inappropriate for Halo’s core gameplay
It creates a large area of “no man’s land” on a map where nobody is actually expected to have a gunfight
It also creates areas that are just segues into different parts of the map, e.g. the hallways on Adrift - those are not ideal fighting locations (see Chill Out for proper map-making inspiration)
Sprint deconstructs the spawning system because players are able to get back in the battle too quickly, especially with a straight-shooting weapon like the DMR and lots of open spaces
Sprint ruins map geometry by creating gaps that can only be traversed with sprint-powered jumps; jumping and shooting is kind of important in Halo
Most significantly, it causes the Spartan to lower their weapon - at no point in a Halo game should a person be unable to shoot their gun unless they’re holding the objective (lol, flagnum)
It downplays the vertical aspect of Halo hugely, creating maps that are horizontally gigantic but vertically insignificantlol, I find this to be entertaining.
How is it bad?
Does it negatively affect anyone?
Does it break game play?
Is it un-balancing in any way that makes the game not fun?
Who am I?
Where am I?
Who are you people?
What is this strange place?
This is a trick question… the people who hate sprint will never take any reason for sprint in any shape for from or “legitimate”… I love Halo either way. It’s not a game breaking mechanic for me.

Staying in spawn didn’t happen often, the BR in H3 was terrible at range and I didn’t play 2 much so no comment. Also, now all you need is a SR in tower on Empire and you will almost always win.
You can still run away if you don’t want to engage someone. This is a lot less common in the other halo’s.
Thanks for presenting your argument in a civil way. We need more responses like this when controversial topics are brought up.
