Getting Started with Halo

My grandson mentioned that he would like to play Halo. What should I purchase to get him started on his Xbox1? I’m accustomed to WoW, where you need to buy the original and all xpacs up to the current one. Is it like that for Halo?

Thanks!

I’d recommend the Master Chief Collection, although he may have a varying multiplayer quality.

343 is also bringing the original Xbox 360 Halos(CE:A, Reach, Halo 3 & ODST) to the Xbox One and all of their DLC will be free.

You pretty much just need the console and a copy of the game or games. As far as Halo on the xbox one goes you have Halo 5 which is the newest main series FPS title, The Master Chief Collection (which has Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4 in it), there is the Halo 3 ODST add-on for MCC which give you that entire game as well. That would give your grandson every Halo FPS except Halo Reach (which is backwards compatible and can be picked up fairly cheaply these days.) If he just wants the latest Halo game than that would be Halo 5. So One or both of those games would be my recommendation. If you do get MCC, I would say it is worth the five dollars to get ODST as well. (at least to me.

Either MCC or Halo 5 will run you about 30 bucks. So if you got both and the ODST add-on you’d be out about 65 dollars. 85 if you get a copy of Reach as well.

As far as DLC goes, there isn’t really DLC for Halo 5. There are req packs (Basically packs you can earn in game or buy using money) that allow you customization options or weapons to use in certain matchmaking modes, but it isn’t necessary to spend money on those. There is the Voices of War pack which is 9.99 which lets you pick between the default and three optional announcers for the multiplayer. I enjoy mine quite a bit, but it isn’t a necessary expendature.

There are also the two Halo wars games HW1 and 2. They are RTS games. So if he is interested in that it’s also an option. There were two mobile games as well, but I’m not well versed enough to recommend them.

Since he has an Xbox One, the best choice would be The Master Chief Collection. It has 4 Halo games on one disc. (Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo 4) So you would get the most bang for your buck with this.He may have some issues with multiplayer since this collection has always had server issues, but the campaigns still work really well, and that would be the best place for any player to get started.

Awesome! Thanks, guys, for the quick and thorough responses! I think I’ll start with MCC and Halo5. If he really gets into it, he’ll add any additions to future wish lists. Again, thank you all so much!
