Well, technically it is… it’s money they’re putting towards HCS related affairs that could’ve been pooled into the production of new content… but this community has repeatedly shown a lack of understanding on this concept.
I support HCS, and I support quality, competitive games. If 343 wants to satisfy all communities as well as fans that demand a higher standard out of their work, they need to better utilize the budget they’re given, design even smarter, and stop producing higher cost/lower value fluff…
Instead, produce appealing low cost/high value content, promote it… give the community something cheap that they’re going to want to spent $5-10 on a a time, weapon skins, armor skins, etc. Condense the over-abundance of armor, but give players more options to customize what is actually available. There’s plenty of potential… endless potential… for armor skins, where players can give their character a different look.
That saves (and makes) them a lot of additional money to spend on the REAL content that is going to add REAL value to the game… DLC maps… BETTER, more original DLC maps. Ones that can maybe actually be added to the HCS rotation post launch!
Maps where the competitive players, who better understand the design logic and consequences of how map geometry is arranged and affects the gameplay, will say “Hmm, this map really provides some new and interesting, open sightlines, excels at promoting team-shooting… Strikes a balance in including SOME close-quarters areas, but doesn’t make nearly the entire map that way (Tyrant). Maps that don’t pigeonhole a player into one route, or promote a gross amount of campy gameplay…”
It’s all a very fine balance… it’s business and lean engineering. 343 is close, but they really need to be smart about how they utilize their resources going forward, and maximize the perceived value of their content for the player, while improving the map offerings even more.
