Getting onyx

Anyone else having trouble getting to onyx and moving up or staying there I’ve been having a problem where I’m 1 game away from onyx and then lose and end up dropping down to diamond 5 I work my way back up to the same spot and drop back down any help or advise

Play with a squad. Going it alone is tough on account of you never knowing what kind of randoms you’re going to get from game to game.

Yea that’ what I do and we seem to run a tight squad always together and we will win every game but when it’ down to the last game to get onyx it seems like we will lose about 4 games in a row and it’ like that every niht

That’s how it should be. If you can’t win getting into Onyx what makes you think you’ll stay there? It’s one thing to reach it but a completely other situation to play all your matches there. You just simply have to outperform your opponents from game to game. It’s about consistency. Accuracy. Strategy.

Execution of all those things simultaneously isn’t even guaranteed but will greatly affect your routine outcomes. You just gotta keep trying and keep pushing. No amount of wall text or praying will suddenly make you perform better. You just gotta keep trying. You get better as you play tougher opponents as it is. So at least you can learn from your mistakes.

Yea that’ what I was looking for is advice I play aggressively and I don’ like to back down and I like to keep pushing which is prolly my biggest problem thanks

Play whit a full team dude thats the best way to rank up

After watching a lot of HaloWC, and then even in the last Social Stream with Tashi and Grim, they emphasize staying alive. Being agressive is fine but it has its moments where staying alive is the better play.

It seems to me at that level of play maybe working a little more with the team you have in terms of strategy as well. Work out who does what at the start of the match.

You can play aggressive as long as you and your team are in the same page and you’re communicating.

Yes, gotta have a team. Had a great solid crew back in July. Of 2017 when I got my onyx in snipers

Alright thanks guys much appreciated

I was hoping to get onyx this season, but I don’t think my magnum aiming skill is good enough yet. I play too much BTB so I’m used to the BR. It’s frustrating when I know I can beat people, but I’m missing easy shots and then end up dying. It also doesn’t help that I’m matching mid onyx or higher tiered people in a lot of my FFA games most likely due to population issues. I’m gonna also try in Slayer and maybe Team Arena and see what happens.

Good luck with this. I am just hoping to stay in Platinum in HCS. It doesn’t really lend itself for randoms. HCS is one of the lowest populated, and it seems that once I get into Platinum I run into teams more often. Plus low level SR players who are obviously smurfs.

Smurfs yea those guys destroy the game

Full disclosure: I’ve never been Onyx.

The advice above is all definitely true for anyone trying to rank up (run with team, stay alive, spawn knowledge, etc.). I’ve been watching a lot of this year’s HWC events instead of Netflix lately, and I think as you get higher in the ranks more emphasis shifts from raw slaying power and gun skill to teamwork.

I watched several episodes of Reclximer do his “Zero to Hero” series (Episode 1 - Halo 5 - PERFECTION? Zero to Hero #1 - YouTube), and early in the series when he’s playing casuals like myself, he can flat-out out-slay and out-gun kids left, right, and center. His team will win without him really having to play OBJ because he’s keeping the bad guys in death screen almost the entire game. As he gets to a higher and higher rank, focus shifts to more OBJ and teamwork because the skill gap is a bit narrower at the top.

Back to watching HWC. Tox wasn’t able to beat Reciprocity because they are THAT much better with the magnum, just like Splyce didn’t beat Tox because they’re THAT much better at shooting than Tox. All the pros are phenomenal. The teamwork, staying alive, and especially the knowledge of spawns and when/how to influence them seem to be the bread and butter of high-level play.

You may have watched some pro play already, but if you haven’t, next time you have dinner or something, pop on some matches on YouTube and give them a watch. I’ve definitely found myself integrating a few of their methods into my gameplay and improving here and there. Also, watch your own gameplay, especially games where you think you could have done better.
