Matchmaking should try as hard as possible to match you in a game hosted on a server in your region.
e.g. Quite often, living on the west coast, I’m matched on a server in the EU (verified using traceroutes to server IP).
Better yet, there should be a toggle, enabled by default, to only match with dedicated hosts on your continent. If you’re not willing to wait or the population is low you could just disable it.
