After a long and painful 3 month departure from Waypoint with my old computer finally giving out, college, and many personal life problems causing me to leave. I have been thankfully doing better recently and finally returning to this place of old with a new computer to post once again.
During my long absent besides trying to get my old computer fixed before buying a new one and other things, I was finishing up my Godzilla 2014 collection but I was ability to pick up a few of new Mega Bloks sets. Here a list of them:
Flamehog
REAP-X Quad Walker
ODST drop pod (blue & green)
Spartan IV pack 2
Spartan Assault pack
Here are some of my thoughts about them.
Flamehog was a very basic built if you’re used to Mega’s past Warthogs. The design is a mix of the classic original trilogy and the rails from the Halo 4 hog with the fame details from Halo Wars. It’s up to par with Mega’s past hogs however thing that bugs me with this one is that they remove the rotating base for the turret that was used for the rocket and Halo 4 hogs. This makes it hard for the figure to hold the gun since their feet can’t be placed on the little studs without some modifications. Also because of how bulky the new figures are, it very hard to put them into the seats with them popping out.
As for the figs, they’re are well done. I like with the two GUNGNIRs have a little Yin and Yang thing going with their colors.
Despise my complaints, this is worth buying mostly for the figures and the flamehog is must have for Halo Wars fans.
The REAP-X Quad Walker is a bit of an interesting creation, as this was an original concept from Mega Bloks themselves. It’s a bit of an outlandish vehicle that looks like a prototype of something I would see in a Japanese tokusatsu movie or show like Gun Head or Super Sentai. The design I’m 50/50 about with it looking like a Falcon’s plot seat with legs on it. I like the idea that it’s a drop from orbit vehicle with a paratrooper mood which reminds me of the HALO jump from Godzilla 2014. That and boosters on the legs could make for some great stop motion ideas like using them to make Pacific Rim-like rocket punch. The Covenant Fuel Rod Turret is a nice bonus.
As for the figures, they are great as ever. The REAP-X Recon look great and yellow Elite Storm has a nice look to it.
Overall, if you didn’t like the past REAP-X sets, you’re possibly not like this one. It suffers the problems from the past sets of being to outlandish, very prototype, and general don’t look they’re from Halo besides in name only. But for those interested, this set is being rereleased with the new figure articulation. Pick up at your own risk but for everyone else I say skip it.
Spartan IV pack 2 is a rerelease of the Spartan IV pack from Spring 2014 but with 2 new UNSC figs with the new articulation. The new figs are an orange GUNGNIR and Active Camo Mark VI. These are great additions though I’m a bit disappointed that AC Spartan doesn’t have any color like the last one and reusing the same Covie figs is a bit annoying. These are just minor problems I have but really don’t hurt this set.
If you have the first Spartan IV pack, this brings in some new things that makes it worth buying.
Spartan Assault pack is first combat unit set to have named figures and I believe the first set to be dedicated just to one game. The named characters that are included are Spartan Edward Davis and Sarah Palmer. These two figs very done and accurate to their in game models. However I’m upset that they didn’t use a female mold for Palmer though I get why they didn’t do it. Since it wouldn’t make her armor interchangeable with other figures but still I would have like that diversity.
As for the Covies, we have an Active Camo Brute minor and a Brute Major in their Reach designs. The figures are well done even though I really hate those designs of the Brutes like I do with most of the designs in Reach. I would have prefer if they use the Halo 2 or 3 designs.
Beside that, this is another great set that Mega has done and I highly recommend to get this especially if you’re a fiction or EU nut.
As for the two ODST drop pods, there’s nothing I can say about outside of I like the figs but hate the drop pods themselves. I’m just happy that I finally have the last of the, what I like to call, the Pacific Rim ODSTs. Can’t to see what they do with the Elite figs.
Now I saved the best for last, my thoughts of the new articulations for the figures. Personally, I like them. It was kind of hard know how they will fair since NECA and S.H. Monsterarts have set a high stander for figure articulation. I think Mega has meet those standers when it comes to mini figures. The removable armor doesn’t feel like a cheap gimmick and I love it that they added detail to the jumpsuit underneath the armor. That and now they handle assault rifles, brs, and etc. properly. Overall, I like them and I hope get more of these figures with hopefully the Covenant getting the new articulation treatment in the future.
Hope you enjoy my thoughts and it’s good to be back.
