Yes, it is. It’s kind of like the current state of trying to buy a series X. People are buying them at like triple the rate because of supply/demand and if you don’t get one when it becomes available, you may not get another shot for months.
Hmm, I think that we can purchase the battle pass at any time, since we can complete it with no time limit and I believe we can “work on it” in later seasons, even if we don’t pay for it. But honestly they’re a bit unclear on that (as they are for every aspect of FOMO).
I still say the time limit is problematic. The time limit is what
- funnels people toward buying challenge swaps
- makes people focus only on challenges instead of playing the game
- frustrates people who don’t have time to play one week
You can still have your “prestige item” under the system I suggested, the difference being the timeliness in which you get your prestige: the week that it is released, or sometime after. You still have to complete the challenge to get the thing so it’s not like it’s no longer a prestige item.
HOWEVER. That being said. The best system is far and away a combination of Reach and 3/4. As you say, Commendations (and things like Vidmasters, ie actual specific challenge/achievement unlocks rather than grind unlocks, and NEVER with a time limit), and play-to-earn-and-spend.
…which is why the Battle Pass should be the centerpiece of the multiplayer. If they doubled the price and doubled the content, I think people would be a lot happier (and spend WAY more money because most people would buy the battle pass!) Plus, they could charge less for the individual armor and make even more money there, from more people buying that as well. Instead of pricing “normal” people out in favor of the financially frivolous and the naive.
True, I was just stream-of-consciousnessing. I’m saying that $260 for games over 10 years is cheap, $26 a year. But that’s making the assumption that every single armor piece you want, you only want one of each component; they are all in the $20 packs; and you never come across a piece of armor you like better later, get buyer’s remorse, and buy a new one. And they never add more armor components. It’s making a lot of assumptions.
But, that being said, that $260 is what we’re looking at for 26 seasons of battle passes which, at an estimated 4 a year, is only 6 and a half years. Assuming the BP stayed at $10 per season. So I think most people who stick with the game will be paying more than $260 over ten years for it anyway, it just sucks that they’re weaponizing FOMO and price gouging in addition to that.
Yeah, I forget to mention the time limit. Commendations were notable for not running out of time.
As for the 10 years. In the past Halo games have had roughly 3-year life spans before another main title releases. So in that ten years, player would spend $60 x 3 ($180) on Halo. So 343 asking players to spend more money on Infinite isn’t unreasonable since it’s the only main purchase (that we know of) for the next decade. But the scummy methods they’re using just isn’t ok.
Just out of curiosity, are you familiar with Titanfall 2’s Coliseum?
It was a mode where 2 players 1v1 each other in a small, circular arena with Krabers (basically the skewer, and just as hard to use). The winner (best 3 of 5) comes out with a random unlock from the pool of free items from the lootbox or credit system.
*NOTE: One thing I would change here is letting the player choose whatever item they want. But to make rare items more special, maybe the player has to “save up” wins, so a legendary item is worth 5 wins, while a common is worth 1. Of course, this devalues a single ticket incredibly, so maybe this isn’t such a good idea, idk. Anyway…
The only caveat is that a Coliseum Ticket is required for entry. These could be earned through lootboxes which were only obtainable through playing the game (performance-based). And obviously, if you lose, you get nothing.
However, your fate was in your own hands. If you lost, all you could say was, “They other player was better than me, but I’ll win next time,” and move on. No hard feelings. People were very supportive after the games too.
But the important part here is that these matches were free and were NOT REQUIRED to progress/earn ANYTHING. If you lost, the only things you lost were:
- An opportunity to earn a free unlock
- A few minutes wasted in a match
To be fair, in those games you also needed to spend like $30 on map packs, and this game was EXTREMELY costly.
However, you also still have to pay $60 for the campaign. Or pay for gamepass. Either way, that cost is still there.
But on the other hand, that’s $60 once for 10 years. Plus whatever additional costs come to that I suppose.
Either way, I don’t think it’s THAT much money spread over 10 years. The scummy, predatory tactics are the problem.
Yes, but iirc it wasn’t necessarily Krabers. You could use your own kit. I recall using the heavy laser as well… maybe that was TF1?
Regardless, I’m familiar with the Kraber

There’s no victim here. You have self control. If you don’t and a game company preys on it that’s on you.
Using these types of affirmations are very dangerous. It’s like saying that if you get mugged, it’s your fault for going down the street.
How is a forceful robbery like a lack of self control? That’s a hysterical comparison. And asserting I’m being ‘dangerous’ is straight up rediculous.
“It’s your fault that our developed psychological manipulation worked.”
Yes and no.
Forceful robbery? Don’t be ridiculous. If you succumb to the pressure of having a knife pressed to your throat that’s on you for being easily manipulated.
It is a totally valid comparison. You are justifying the malpractice of the company by blaming potential victims for falling into the FOMO system.
“The McRib only comes around a few times every couple of years. It’s just like armed robbery!”
This is insane and no amount of shaming me will get me to entertain this logic. Listen to yourselves.
The wild thing about this is applying it to the only studio with forever battle passes.
We’re on the Halo forum, talking about Halo Infinite, looking for ways to improve Halo multiplayer. What company do you want us to talk about if not?
I learned a long time ago that you’re not going to be able to please everyone. Not everyone is playing for your benefits or your likes, so don’t put it on yourself to expect to play for others benefits or likes. Play your game. I focus on the team aspect, so I understand exactly where you are coming from, and I don’t want to sound like a hypocrite, but sometimes you have to play a little selfish. I find myself playing the game for fun when I don’t get a match that provides the capability to compete a challenge. But, when I need to complete a challenge, I’ll go after that challenge, as long as I’m still playing the objective. It keeps the challenges, well… challenging.
Man, why are yall so obsessed with fast food?
The fact of the matter is, the game would be better without practices that are intended to weaponize FOMO, whether or not they’re successful in doing so. Your opinions on whether or not FOMO works (it objectively does) or whether it’s good or bad in a vacuum or applied to completely different scenarios are entirely irrelevant to the discussion at hand.
You know what I think? I think you bought something in the store and now you don’t want the system to improve for anyone else because you want to feel special for wasting your mom’s money.
This is not fully marketed properly. Plenty of people have no clue this is the case even here, let alone outside of this bubble.
In this instance you can improve yourselves.
Because if FOMO didn’t work it wouldn’t be a thing.
True you had to buy Map packs, but it wasn’t like you were locked out of MP if you didn’t. In fact, the people who DID buy them were often holding the short stick since the maps didn’t enter rotation unless everyone in the lobby had the pack (iirc).
True, wanting to spend some extra money on the game isn’t really a problem. I was actually planning to buy the BP until I played like 3 games and realized what was going on. It’s the exorbitant prices (and other tactics). As we speak, they’re selling THREE emblems for $5. In TF2, that would get you like 20 camos for your pilot, titan, and ALL weapons + like 20 banners. Of course, Infinite is “free to play”, but 343 is still getting those $60 payments tomorrow
Didn’t play TF1.
In my experience you had to use Krabers (and Wingmans). Maybe it was different at launch. I didn’t get it until 2018.
As I recall, everyone needed the Heroic pack, the Mythic pack got its own playlist, and then Cold Storage (how tf do I remember that name) was free.
Yep, it’s bonkers.
I wonder how the gamepass pays out but I imagine Microsoft is getting the better end of the deal, although tbh we get an amazing deal out of it too.
Weird. Yeah I definitely used the spartan laser in 1v1s.
