When grappling a vehicle you will automatically hijack it without any additional button presses, and seemingly even if you actually miss the vehicle a bit.
With grappling being as easy as it is you should also need to time your button press to highjack the vehicles you latch onto. This would balance the power of the grapple a bit and add more satisfaction to a successful jacking.
Additionally, there are times when you want to latch onto a vehicle without hijacking it. Maybe you want to swing past it, but with automatic hijacking you no longer have this option.
I never tested this myself but agree with your take.
Sidenote on this. With the grapple as a permanent unlimited mechanic in the campaign. Will all the Banished vehicles just be free to grab even when there are enemies in them? Won’t that be a bit easy?

Potentially some may have something that repels the grapple.
I don’t agree, while it’s a cool concept, lots of players would have no issue perfecting this so the only people who you are hurting is the newer and less experienced players who probably benefit most from it and these “cool” moments.
I think the grapple is perfect as is. You can also cancel a grapple by pressing the grapple button again. So there is actually some skill and timing there to land exactly where you want.

Newer less experienced players eventually become older and more experienced. Why should everything they do go right on the first try? I’m certainly still no pro with the grapple, and that’s what makes it fun.
Getting rid of automatic hijacking only opens more gameplay possibilities.

I agree and also + the same thing with automatic melee.

You can grapple already cancel, there’s an awesome clip online of someone grappling and cancelling so they could smash the Warthog to pieces with the hammer instead of hijacking.
I don’t think the extra press of a button would make much of a difference honestly.
Could we get a compromise and have a small hitbox of the vehicle you have to hit you get the auto hijack for the driver and passenger area???

I was going to agree with you, OP, until I saw this.
Maybe there could be an option in settings to toggle it on or off. They have one for automatic clamber, why not automatic grapplejacking?

If you want to take advantage of the momentum from the full swing you no longer have that option. It’s also a guaranteed hijack, which is a bit boring. If range to vehicle and button timing are in play the grapple becomes that much more interesting. At the moment you can completely mess up a swing and you’ll still hijack the vehicle.
Also, grappling a fast moving vehicle from the front, while it is careening towards you at top speed, should always result in you splattering on the grills.
Make grapplejacking smart and clutch. Not a “get out of jail free” card.
If you’re afraid of new players, they will learn. Just like they learned that standing in front of a boosting ghost and holding X is a bad idea, they will learn that grappling the front of that boosting ghost is also a bad idea.

That’s a good point. It is nice because I don’t have to worry about potentially missing the opportunity, but sometimes I may want to.
I agree. You should be splattered if you grapple the front of an oncoming vehicle.
